Review

"What Connected Educators Do Differently should be required reading for those working with students and staff in today’s fast-moving digital world. Whitaker, Zoul, and Casas are dynamic leaders who fully understand the importance of connecting beyond one’s immediate surroundings to build a network of excellence to best facilitate learning."

--Jerry Blumengarten, Twitterbrarian at @cybraryman1, former NYC teacher and creator of Cybrary Man's Educational Web Sites

"Whitaker, Zoul, and Casas offer readers practical suggestions for becoming a connected professional in today's educational landscape. Not only do these three experts share a wealth of information for getting connected to learn, share, and grow together, but they also do so in a manner that encourages putting people first to create a truly effective and positive school culture for everyone involved."

--Erin Klein, award-winning teacher, edtech blogger, and speaker

"This is the definitive guide to being a connected educator! You will learn from cover to cover not only how to be a connected educator, but also why we should be connected. Practical tips, advice from multiple experts, and empowering stories will fire you up to become the change education needs!"

--Kyle Pace, K-12 Instructional Technology Specialist and Google Certified Teacher

"Todd, Jeff, and Jimmy share an insight on more than being a "connected" educator, but on learning and making a difference for the reader and others. Their enthusiasm throughout the book is contagious, but it is their practical and simple steps that they share from both their experience and research that will make a world of difference in your practice, ultimately leading to better learning opportunities for yourself, and your students."

--George Couros, internationally-recognized thought leader and a Division Principal of Innovative Teaching and Learning in Alberta, Canada

"Educators are sharing and connecting more than ever--with students, with parents and community members, and with each other. How well we do our jobs has become ever-more dependent on the quality of our connectedness and communications. What Connected Educators Do Differently raises the bar for how these connections need to happen, and for how they can radically improve what we’re doing for students."

--Angela Maiers, nationally-recognized speaker and consultant on 21st century teaching, and coauthor of The Passion-Driven Classroom

"I often recommend Todd Whitaker's books whenever I get a chance so having him partner with exceptional school leaders like Jimmy Casas and Jeff Zoul on such a powerful resource for today's educators is amazing. Through specific examples, practical ideas, and humor, this book will encourage educators who are already connected to continue their work and inspire those who are curious about becoming a connected educator, but don't know where to start. This will become a major book in my library and one that I will gift to new teachers!"

--Dwight Carter, Principal, New Albany High School, 2013 NASSP Digital Principal of the Year, and 2014 Bammy Secondary Principal of the Year Award winner

"The brilliance of this book lies in the stories that illustrate the countless reasons why educators should be connected in online and global--not just local--communities of practice. The Follow 5, Find 5, and Take 5 sections at the end of each chapter are fantastic!"

--Dr. Scott McLeod, Director of Innovation, Prairie Lakes Area Education Agency, and Founding Director, CASTLE

"What Connected Educators Do Differently is a great resource all educators should read. Todd, Jeff and Jimmy lead by example in their daily work and share their vast experience through this book. I'm not surprised by how many insightful tips and great down-to-earth information was offered considering the caliber of the authors. This is definitely not one to miss."

--Jennie Magiera, Digital Learning Coordinator for the Academy for Urban School Leadership in Chicago

Make it Mandatory!

Students in the Schools of Education should be required to read this book. While there are many ways to connect through the internet, all teachers will be inspired by Whittaker, Casas, and Zoul’s, “What Connected Teachers Do Differently”. Inspired not just about how technology brings teachers and schools together, how the book reinvigorates one’s love for teaching. Readers are inspired when authors tell them, “...to take pride in the fact that you do have unique talents and experiences, (that) others not only can, but will, learn from you.” (p.6) The book is full of tips and ways to effectively use social media tools. For example, a school might consider having more than one Twitter account. “Possibilities include an account for the principal, student club/activities, athletics, fine arts, and even parent/booster account(s).” (p. 31)

One of the best parts about the book is the end of the chapters. The authors have compiled three sections that bid interaction. The first section is called “Follow 5” and offers the reader five different examples of the concepts that the authors are describing. The examples are of teachers, administrators, and professionals modeling these best practices. Along with a brief description of how the model utilizes the concept, the authors give out the twitter handles for each of these modelers as a way for readers to directly connect.
The authors have added a second end-of-chapter resource in the “Find 5” section. This section shares and describes links to resources that are pertinent to a chapter’s content. For example, the first chapter, “Invest in P2LN” has the resource called “Twitter in 60 Seconds.

Jimmy, Todd, and Jeff are among the best ambassadors education can offer. Each of these authors leads by example and is adept at building relationships and serving others. These three connected educators make time to help others become the best they can be. They offer practical advice for teachers who are looking to revolutionize education. The authors point out that face to face relationships are by far preferable to those made online, but for teachers or administrators looking to improve their craft or engage a wider audience, they give a GPS for navigating the online world. They include information on various forms of social media as well as real life examples of connectedness in action. If you are looking to improve your teaching, leading, and connecting Jimmy, Todd, and Jeff can teach you how to reach out and make a difference in the world.

This book is for all educators. If you have not started down the path of becoming a connected educator this is a perfect place to start. It outlines what you need to focus on and how to grow your PLN. If you have been at it a while, as I have, this was a great read to help me refocus my energy where it needs to be. I was struggling with keeping up. This book has invigorated me to get up, brush myself off, and jump back on that wagon.

The book is an easy read. You will find yourself nodding in agreement with what is written. It all makes sense...and it is best for the two things that matter most as an educator: yourself and the kids!
