What did you put in your pocket?
What did you put in your pocket?
In your pockety pockety pocket
Early Monday morning?

What do YOU put in YOUR pocket?

Everyday things like a spinky spanky handkerchief? Or silly things like slushy gushy pudding?

No matter what you put in your pockets, you'll get a whole lot of ideas from Beatrice Schenk de Regnier's catchy, cumulative rhymes. Together with Michael Grejniec's zany, bright illustrations, they'll make you look at pockets -- and the days of the week -- in a whole new way!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-As various animals dash through the week, they ask, "What did you put in your pocket/What did you put in your pocket/in your pockety pockety pocket?" The contents include chocolate pudding, "slushy glushy pudding/Early Monday morning," ice-cold water, "nicy icy water/Early Tuesday morning," a scoop of ice cream, "slurpy glurpy ice cream/Early Wednesday morning," and so on throughout the week. The story ends with the characters hovering in a hot-air balloon above a girl, asking, "What did you put in your pocket?" This cumulative tale is illustrated in a finger-painting technique that attempts to replicate a child's art style. The result is very busy, messy illustrations that overwhelm the already struggling text. The characters are only barely identifiable, and the background is so cluttered and textured that both the figures and words are easily lost in the chaos. The text itself, originally published in 1958 and newly illustrated, seems to have been randomly placed on the spreads with no thought given to natural flow or readability.

4.0 out of 5 stars good, funny book for children, January 12, 2011
By
This review is from: What Did You Put in Your Pocket? (Hardcover)
I ordered this because my grandma gave it to me as a kid and I remembered how much I enjoyed it. It does not seem to be exactly the same, illustrations are not the same, but the story is cute! My grandson (that I bought it for) also loves the funniness of it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kooky fun, September 16, 2009
This review is from: What Did You Put in Your Pocket? (Hardcover)
Boy is the School Library Journal lady who reviewed this a cranky old coot. This book is crazy fun. It doesn't make a lot of sense, and I cannot figure out what the drawings have to do with the story, but both my kids dig it. And so do I.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!, August 28, 2007
This review is from: What Did You Put in Your Pocket? (Hardcover)
My 4 year old son loves this book. We laugh so hard thoughout the book that we can hardly talk. We imagine that we have our own pocket and what it would feel like to put all the items in. It's great for imagination and teaching the senses.
