Great Find... a Pleasant surprise,
By
This review is from: What to Do With Daylight (Audio CD)
I had $8 NZ left at the airport when leaving Christchurch, NZ this January. There was a table of CD's, priced at $8.00 So, I asked for a NZ artist and the clerk suggested this album, What to Do with Daylight.
This was such a pleasant 'find'. I really enjoy Brooke's style, and her music. She has a soulful voice, and seems to pull from many styles. I would classify her work as a bit of Sarah McLaughlin, Louise Goffin and similar. I like Save the World the best, followed by Lifeline.

This is a great collection of songs and very uplifting and inspirational. All of the songs are beautifully written and sung by Brooke Fraser. I listen to it over and over again. If you want to hear something fresh and inspiring, have a listen to this one. It's a must have.

I have, without a doubt adored this girls music from the moment she set foot in the NZ charts...followed her and devourered her music.
So the time comes where it is unavoidable, I must, I must purchase her album. And by gosh, I'm glad I did. OKay, a few things that annoyed me as a New Zealander is the fact that I knew most of the songs on the album. But ofcourse thats not a problem for most... I love, love, love arithmetic, with is classical influence and clever lyrics. And absolulty adore Better, with is more pop influenced sound. "Without you" is gorgeous, one of my major *turn up* songs as of now, Saving the world....again, love it! But one track that has been failed to be mentioned in all other reviews is "Indelible". An eastern-style into leads you into the first minute of the song. Gracefully its takes you on to her soothing vocals, and wonderful lyrics, sheading the light on a lovers doubt. Personally I dislike "Still in love" as i dislike the seeming acid-jazz influence. But thats just me. "Reviere" is another that somewhat disappoints me. But again, thats just me, its a bit too happy-poppy for me. Not that her stunning voice doesnt make them enjoyable. All in all, i think this Album is going to burn a hole in my cd player, cas it is Hot! (cheesy but true).

Brooke Fraser is my favorite new artist and this album is a wonderful window into her style and talent... it's just too short (I think there's only 7 or 8 cuts). She sings so beautifully and effortlessly, and her lyrics are interesting - deep in some songs, and fun in others. She's kind of like a cross between Sarah McLachlan and Cheryl Crow, and jazzy like Nora Jones other times. I hope she comes out with another album soon - love her!

One of my sons was married this summer, and two of the songs sung in the wedding were Brooke Fraser songs.(Love is Waiting and Arithmetic) I love her voice, and this album brings back good memories of the wedding.

Standing Ovation,

I had the pleasure of hearing Brooke sing live today; she was a guest at our church in LA ... and did she EVER sing her heart out. She brought tears to people's eyes and inspired a standing ovation ... this in a city and church where we're used to people who can sing. She is absolutely awesome. I recommend her CD to anyone who likes to smile, be encouraged and live out life with great music playing in the background. You go Brooke!

So what's your fun afternoon activity?,

Crafting an album can be a most difficult task to take on-board I'd imagine. The record label funding studio time, the artist(s) working with the producer(s) to select the right tone, beat and structure of the tracks in question, not to mention the artist themselves working out which coveted selection of musical cuts they have to choose from. Then there's all the promotional work to barter, along with marketing the final product; well, you get the idea. So for a debut release to be as excellent as this is, it makes you wonder. Is there is any room for improvement? The answer is yes. Enter, Brooke Fraser and her very outstanding view of what musical notation, harmony and lyrics should really sound like. The whole medley of the album itself can put you in various scenes as you "Waste Another Day" in your life, because the beats just feel so right. Case and point; the first track, "Arithmetic" almost sounds as if you've endured from the storm only to reflect back out your window and ponder questions of loved ones. Track six, "Without You" has that café thing happening, where you could be sipping Lattés with your partner late on a Thursday afternoon, surrounded by the coolest of social cats. Tracks three and seven, "Still In Love" & "Reverie" while still retaining the buzz that is society coffee, have elements (well, I thought so) of old school Acid Jazz similar to that of the Brand New Heavies' Brother/Sister album. The only things missing on some of these cuts were the lack of horns, but in retrospect we aren't reviewing a Jazz artist so I'll move right along. Track eleven, "Mystery" could sound as if there was an epic Ballard played out by lovers torn apart through political warfare and family that only that culture would understand. Call it an uneducated guess, but this artist can really hold it down in the different styled genres that are current today, creating a unique but original sound that is all her in every possible sense. The percussions, organs and piano work along with basically every other instrument orchestrated on this whole ensemble is harmonious candy for ones ears and to top it off, Brooke's vocals are of a sexy delicious nature to the highest degree. If anyone suggests to you that the debut of this rising star is mediocre at best will have to seriously have his or her head examined by only the most professional of mental treatment facilities. Tracks noteworthy of heavy repeat time: Arithmetic Without you Better Of course, I could have listed all of them, but you'll just have to buy/import "What To Do With Daylight" to really get a feel for the talent that is displayed here. In this world of musical egotisms and cloud drifters, it's solid to note that we still have artists out there who are grounded enough to pave the way to how real music should be played and listened to. Brooke Fraser will still be the one everyone wants. |
