If you only buy one Tanya CD, this is the one!,
By A Customer
This review is from: What Do I Do With Me (Audio CD)
Tanya Tucker has recorded many cds, most contain several very good songs surrounded by filler. By the time this album came along, Tanya was in the midst of a career resurgance (about halfway into her time with Capital records). Upon release, it was critically acclaimed and became Tanya's biggest selling album to date. And what an album it is! This is probably the most mature, most thoroughly satisfying album (yet) from Nashville's most feisty performer. She stands in sharp contrast to the bland, faceless, factory-made country/pop that Nashville currently favors. Her 'complicated' personality dots this cd, and she gives memorable performances to memorable tunes. Mid- to upper-tempo tunes like "If Your Heart Ain't Busy Tonight" and "Down to My Last Teardrop" became big hits, deservedly so. Ballads drenched with her emotion-filled, smokey-throated voice like the title tune (one of her best songs ever) are convincing in a way that current country/pop divas (and you know who they are!) can't come close to. "Bidding America Goodbye" is a touching song that vividly describes the plight of today's farmers. "Some Kind of Trouble" is bluesy, country/rock that Tanya can do so well. And the last song, "Right About Now", is a real album highlight. If you are looking for a Tanya Tucker album that is consistently excellent, contains some of her best vocal work, and has songs that you'll find yourself humming to yourself long after you listen to it -- then this is the cd to get.

Tanya's Best CD Ever!,

In her twentieth year of hitmaking, the every youthful Tanya Tucker showed no signs of slowing down with this stellar release. Working with longtime producer Jerry Crutchfield, Tucker collected a fine assortment of songs which displayed her ability to perform practically any style of popular music. The opener "If Your Heart Ain't Busy Tonight" showcases her playful, rockabilly side while the bluesy "Some Kind Of Trouble" and the haunting "Everything That You Wanted" present Tucker at her most soulful. The title track and "He Was Just Leaving" remind us that no one belts out a heartbreaking ballad quite like Tanya. Rounding out her eclectic selections is the Spanish-flavored "Time And Distance," the torchy "Right About Now," and the socially conscious "Bidding America Goodbye." The standout track was the infectious leadoff single "Down To My Last Teardrop", but actually, there isn't a dud in the bunch. What Do I Do With Me stands at the crowning achievement in Tucker's long career.

Tanya's most successful original album,

I can well understand why so many people think this is Tanya's finest album, especially if they have never heard Complicated, her often overlooked 1997 album. This is a masterpiece - but Tanya recorded several albums of a similar high quality so it doesn't really matter which is best.If your heart ain't busy tonight, Some kind of trouble, What do I do with me and Down to my last teardrop, the first four tracks here, were released as singles in America and all made the country top ten. You've probably heard them if you are thinking of buying this album. Great as they are, my favorite song here - indeed, my favorite of all the songs that Tanya has recorded - is Bidding America goodbye. This is a song about the plight of an American farmer that cannot make a living from the land any more because of falling wheat prices, a problem compounded by an unsympathetic banker based in a big city, who has no understanding of agriculture. Tanya conveys the message of the song in a far more effective way than any amount of ranting could ever do. There is a dramatic edge to Everything that you want. Trail of tears, Time and distance, He was just leaving and Right about now are all great songs, any one of which might have been singles. This was the album that led to Tanya being awarded CMA Female vocalist of the year in 1991, the only time that she ever won the award. Unquestionably well deserved, but we can only wonder why she has never won this award before or since. If you enjoy Tanya's music - even a little - you will enjoy this album.

A strong and sassy album from Tanya!,

One thing I love about Tanya is how she never just releases an album with only ballads or only up-beat songs. She mixes them all in into a nice blend like here. And all her ballads are very strong. This is the CD that earned her the CMA female vocalist of the year, and this is why:
1. The CD starts with this saucy number and gets you excited about the rest of the tracks! 5/5 2. Tanya's in trouble, but she sounds great! Poppy tune. 5/5 3. Beautiful ballad. You can hear the pain in her voice. 5/5 4. Another saucy midtempo/uptempo song with attitude. Tanya's letting her man know she's fed up. 5/5 5. Ballad. The lyrics are deep, but the song doesn't do anything for me. 1/5 6. The most up-tempo song on the CD. It makes you want to get up on the floor. Favourite song on the CD. 5/5 7. Ironic song. Great lyrics, but the song is too slow for my liking. 3/5 8. Ballad. Beautiful lyrics. 4/5 9. Another ballad. Boring ballad. 1/5 10. Best ballad on the CD. It's so cute and romantic. 5/5 |
