I have all of Candy Dulfer's other CDs and this is by far my favorite. It's got great "active" sax along with a good mixture of funky stuff. I recommend it, especially if you haven't heard Candy Dulfer before.

Being a musician myself, this is the type of party/groove album I'd love to make. It has all of the elements: it's hip, cool, funky, smart, a little crazy, and terribly sexy. My favorite cut is "Nikki's Dream"... it drips with soulful sensuality.

Alto saxophone player Candy Dulfer has matured from Saxuality's sex kitten to this album's party girl. Unfortunately, Ms. Dulfer seemed willing to take more risks on her first album, mixing up ballads with smooth jazz and one memorable percussion-driven tune.

That's not to say the funkier dance-jazz tunes on "What Does It Take" are at all bad. The back-to-back "Soullala" and "2025" are a 9-minute dance party all by themselves. And the woman, it turns out, actually can sing! She wisely prefers to let the instruments dominate and let her voice take a back seat, but she doesn't caterwaul like she did on Saxuality. Definite plus there.

The only thing missing from this CD is a sense of experimentation. Perhaps being a female sax player is experimentation enough for her; Pamela Williams is the only other major artist in that category that I know of. I can listen to Saxuality's "Jazzid" even after almost 10 years and still find something new on every listen. After playing this CD a few times, I already feel as if I've gleaned what's to be gotten from it.

Best just to treat this CD as terrific music to liven up a party. Ms. Dulfer certainly delivers the goods with technical proficiency. Smooth jazz fans and Candy Dulfer devotees will find it worth their money. Everyone else should at least consider it, but only as a second-tier jazz purchase.

This girl plays some sweet sounds!

CANDY DULFER is definitely a very goodlooking lady. She is also a master of the instrument. She is a successful performer to her fans.
But her SOULLALA is only "So lala" - no PEP, no IGNITION,
French Fries without salt (the Dutch make them almost as good as the Belgians, or as good?..).
Most performers get even better playing together with others. DAVID SANBORN/BOB JAMES, LOGGINS/MCDONALD, PATTI AUSTIN/JAMES INGRAM, CLARKE/DUKE : maybe she should try to play with some of the FIRST LEAGUE and she'll find out WHAT'S IT TAKE............
