What Doesn't Kill You is a definite nail-biter! The suspense in incredible! I was left breathless throughout! Recruited by the CIA, Catherine will do anything to protect those she loves... Hu Chang and her son Luke. Through flashback we witness what she did in the past and we understand the cruelty that she'd endured and what she did in order to escape captivity. No child should be sold into slavery as a prostitute and made to live the life she did. There is a lot of "Kick Butt" action that will keep you on the edge.

Format: Hardcover
Iris Johansen loves writing strong heroines, precocious youngsters, and dashing men. All of these character types are present in her latest offering. The novel follows CIA agent Catherine Ling as she searches for Hu Chang, a genius herbalist who's on the run from both friends and foes. Everyone wants to get their hands on Hu Chang's latest creation--an untraceable poison called Pondera--for their own nefarious ends. Catherine is tasked with finding her former mentor before his work falls into the wrong hands.

Catherine may be the heroine, but Hu Chang is the real breakout character of the book. As an ageless trickster mentor, he's an infuriating neutral who seeks balance in everything he does. Hu Chang deals with the good guys and bad guys with the same arrogance. When he's around, he's entertaining.

Unfortunately, the action is occasionally bogged down by the histories of even minor characters. Too many of them have appeared in previous Johansen novels, and it's difficult to care for them all.

Despite some flaws, "What Doesn't Kill You" is a great choice for light vacation reading. While it won't win any literary awards, reading it certainly won't kill you.

Format: Hardcover
CIA Agent Catherine Ling was abandoned as a toddler on the streets of Hong Kong. She became adept as a commodity trader selling information, which enabled her to survive. As a teen, apothecary poisoner/healer Hu Chang saved her life from the thugs who owned much of the streets. The assassin became her mentor. As an adult, Catherine joined the CIA where she has become one of their best field operatives.

Chang creates a new drug so powerful it quickly kills with no trace. Weapons trafficker Hugh Nardik hears rumors of the legendary Chang's latest elixir and wants it as he has plans for this deadly toxin. Nard needs to control Chang's Achilles' heel Catherine to steal the drug for him. The way to make her cooperate is through her son.

Over the top of the "Peak" with superheroes and supervillains; fans will enjoy Catherine Ling's first lead role after supporting Eve Duncan in previous thrillers (see The Bonnie trilogy and Chasing the Night). The fast-paced storyline grips the audience from the onset and never let's go until the final confrontation as evil and not quite good battle globally. The author once again has a super bestseller that readers will finish the book in one setting as they will be unable to put the book down because it is so absorbing.

Having never written a review before, I felt compelled to after reading this book. The story line is weak, the dialogue is repetitive and the characters are one dimensional. I started reading and by page 50 was scanning, halfway through I was just reading every other paragraph just to get it done. Having enjoyed her books in the past I assumed I would this one too. Nope! It will be awhile before I try another of her books. Save your $13 for something else.

I had high expectations for this book because of the good reviews. This book is just OK. Not the type that I can read in one sitting. There were parts that are slow moving. I found myself just flipping through the pages because it gets boring! Even the encounter between catherine and Nardik didn't appear to be exciting or suspenseful at all! I have stopped reading Iris Johanssen for a while because I cannot stand her Eve Duncan stories anymore. Since this is not about Eve and her forever missing daughter Bonnie, I thought it will be a better story. Mistake! Maybe it is just me...maybe not. I didn't like this book so much and for the price it is not worth it!

i started reading iris johansen books many years ago and i used to enjoy them, but as with most top authors, it got to the point where it seemed she was just churning out fodder to fulfill a publisher's deadline and it became a chore to even try to finish one of her books. i recently picked this new one up at the library, hoping that since it wasn't another tiresome tale about bonnie, it might be good. THANK GOODNESS I DIDN'T PAY FOR IT!! all i can say is that this one is just absolutely beyond ridiculous...it truly sounds like something a 13 year old might write. this is it for me...i won't waste any more time on her books...ever.

I am a fan of Jack Reacher and Joe Pike action style fiction as well as Harry Bosch and others. This is not an anti-female heroine criticism. This book is just poorly written and practically incoherent at times. I forced myself to finish it with the hope that it would at least have a good ending. Even that fell flat. What a disaster, I will not buy a book written by Johansen again.
