Book Description

April 17, 2012

It’s the deadliest poison known to man.

He’s the only one who knows its true power.

She’s the only one who can stop the evil.

The chase is on. . . .

Number-one bestselling author Iris Johansen showcases one of her most fascinating characters yet, pitted against one of the most ruthless killers, in a novel that will make you forget to breathe. . . .

Catherine Ling was abandoned on the streets of Hong Kong at age four. Schooled in the art of survival, she traded in the only commodity she had: information. As a teenager, she came under the tutelage of a mysterious man known only as Hu Chang---a skilled assassin and master poisoner. As a young woman, she was recruited by the CIA and now she is known as one of their most effective operatives. Having lived life in the shadows, Catherine is aware of the wobbly moral compass of her existence and even more aware of just how expendable she is to those she deals with. When her old friend Hu Chang creates a formula that’s not only deadly but completely untraceable, the race begins to be the first to get it. With rogue operative John Gallo also on the hunt, Catherine finds herself up against a group so villainous and a man so evil that she may not survive in her quest to protect those she cares about: Hu Chang and Luke---the son who was stolen from Catherine and only recently brought home safe. Using all of her formidable skills, Catherine Ling proves the age-old belief that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

Iris Johansen is at her page-turning best in this novel that takes you from the corridors of Langley to the alleyways of Hong Kong and the darkest places of the human soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Kick Butt!" April 20, 2012
By Taylor
Format:Hardcover
What Doesn't Kill You is a definite nail-biter! The suspense in incredible! I was left breathless throughout! Recruited by the CIA, Catherine will do anything to protect those she loves... Hu Chang and her son Luke. Through flashback we witness what she did in the past and we understand the cruelty that she'd endured and what she did in order to escape captivity. No child should be sold into slavery as a prostitute and made to live the life she did. There is a lot of "Kick Butt" action that will keep you on the edge.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just OK May 7, 2012
By Cecille
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had high expectations for this book because of the good reviews. This book is just OK. Not the type that I can read in one sitting. There were parts that are slow moving. I found myself just flipping through the pages because it gets boring! Even the encounter between catherine and Nardik didn't appear to be exciting or suspenseful at all! I have stopped reading Iris Johanssen for a while because I cannot stand her Eve Duncan stories anymore. Since this is not about Eve and her forever missing daughter Bonnie, I thought it will be a better story. Mistake! Maybe it is just me...maybe not. I didn't like this book so much and for the price it is not worth it!

4.0 out of 5 stars fast-paced thriller April 17, 2012
Format:Hardcover
CIA Agent Catherine Ling was abandoned as a toddler on the streets of Hong Kong. She became adept as a commodity trader selling information, which enabled her to survive. As a teen, apothecary poisoner/healer Hu Chang saved her life from the thugs who owned much of the streets. The assassin became her mentor. As an adult, Catherine joined the CIA where she has become one of their best field operatives.

Chang creates a new drug so powerful it quickly kills with no trace. Weapons trafficker Hugh Nardik hears rumors of the legendary Chang's latest elixir and wants it as he has plans for this deadly toxin. Nard needs to control Chang's Achilles' heel Catherine to steal the drug for him. The way to make her cooperate is through her son.

Over the top of the "Peak" with superheroes and supervillains; fans will enjoy Catherine Ling's first lead role after supporting Eve Duncan in previous thrillers (see The Bonnie trilogy and Chasing the Night). The fast-paced storyline grips the audience from the onset and never let's go until the final confrontation as evil and not quite good battle globally. The author once again has a super bestseller that readers will finish the book in one setting as they will be unable to put the book down because it is so absorbing.
