From the Back Cover

What woman would refuse a Duke’s kiss?

Running from a dark secret past, Isabella Masters craves peace and stability, a life far from the prying eyes of society.

She does not dream of landing a lord.

But in the arms of a stranger with magnificent eyes, she loses herself in one breath-stealing kiss— only to discover she has been misled by a reluctant Duke.

Angered but enthralled, she dares not submit . . . though her passionate heart begs her to. He cannot wed her . . . but he must not lose her.

Only one possibility remains— one too scandalous to consider . . . yet too tempting to resist.

About the Author

Most days Lavinia Kent loves her life and knows that she has found her own happily-ever-after with her husband and three children But on those other days (you know which ones!), she is very glad for the wonderful romances, sensuous gowns, and tall, sexy men that fill her mind – and then her computer.

Lavinia lives in Washington, DC, with her family and an ever-changing menagerie of pets. She attended Wellesley College as an undergraduate and holds an MBA from Georgetown University.

What a Duke Wants is Lavinia’s fourth book from Avon Romance. She also has a fun and sexy serial of e-novellas, The Real Duchesses of London, available from Avon Impulse.

More About the Author

Lavinia Kent never knew that most people don't make up stories in their heads to pass the time. She still has a hard time understanding how those who don't survive the doctor's waiting room or a grocery store line without another world to escape into.

As the mother of three, Lavinia finds "leisure time" to be ever-elusive, but when she is not reading romance novels, she watches far too much HBO and reality television. It must also be noted that she has an encyclopedic knowledge of all things Buffy and the new Doctor Who.

About ONCE AND FOREVER

ONCE AND FOREVER is an anthology of original work put together by my critique group. We all write with different voices and styles in completely different genres, but we share a deep belief in the "forever" romance and wanted to give our readers a chance to try something new.

It's our way of offering a little sampling and flavor.

I hope it's as much fun to read as it was to write.

Customer Reviews

The heroine is kind of weak and not as strong and defiant as I like my characters.

WHAT A DUKE WANTS is a fast paced, fun, and very entertaining read with a predictable plot, yet it will make you feel warm and fuzzy all over.

For me, a good book is one that I don't click past words, paragraphs and pages from boredom or irritation.

Escaping to the horse barn one night, Mark Smythe, Duke of Strattington, overhears a young woman muttering about "who covers a cock?" and naturally his interest is quite ummm, aroused. The woman in question is Isabella Masters, or Isabella Smith as she introduces herself to this man whom she believes has come to the barn to take care of the problem that is bothering the high and mighty Duke. Little does she know she is rambling on to the actual duke about his wretched steward man and all his ridiculous rules. Isabella is a nursemaid on the run from a shameful and torrid past and she finds it utterly unfathomable that a duke would think himself so much better than anyone else that he would send a nursemaid out to the barn with the baby until the baby is quiet. As Isabella is prattling on, Mark is instantly drawn to her. He does not get a chance to say he is the duke, but a very unexpected one as he inherited from his late uncle after his death and his sons death, and all those horrid rules were the old dukes way of life. Not Marks. Instead Mark is able to feel like himself...not like his new title and rules in life and he enjoys the way Isabella talks to him. Just him.

As Isabellas employer, Mrs. Wattingham, is on the way to the kings coronation and Mark just happens to be going there as well, he conveniently arrives at all the same inns as Isabella and they continue to meet in the horse stables and continue their acquaintance. They only talk (well, for the most part..there are a few hot kisses) as Mark knows he needs to confess the full extent of his identity but the opportunity never presents itself until one very steamy encounter later in which they are discovered together does the whole truth about Mark become revealed to Isabella.

Nice plot but I couldn't finish the book. I hated the writing style and how she drags every moment on 3 pages... You can skip 10 pages and still be in the same scene. Awful.
Don't get me wrong, I simply love romance novels, but apparently not by this author.

The story was predictable and did not grab my attention . It needed a stronger heroine with more spunk. I would want to see more adventure between the two main characters.

After much waiting, Isabella's story is here! You will not be disappointed.

In this tale we find Miss Isabella Masters, who has deliberately disappeared from her home and family. She is a nursemaid traveling on her way to London with her charge (Oh, no, not London!) when into the picture steps Mark, an estate agent. Isabella is keeping a few secrets, but then Mark has at least one big secret of his own.

What will Isabella decide to do about Mark? What will Mark decide to do about Isabella?

To find out you must read this much anticipated and well written book.

Although this book can be read alone and stands on its own merits, I highly recommend that you read the other books in the series, simply because they are such good books.

I feel compelled to write a personal note to the author to say: Lavinia, this is a wonderful story. Keep `em coming!

After waiting almost three years for this book to be released.... I can say it was 100% worth the wait!

If the first line of the book "who covers a cock?" don't get you interested to "read" I don't know what will!

This is a very interesting and entertaining story with some mystery, suspense and a lot of sex appeal...

Isabella Masters "Smith" left the scene a few books back and now after three books she appears, and finds herself traveling back to her past. In the mist of this she finds her "prince" or rather her "Duke" and the secrets they both share separately will tie them together or apart forever?

The scenes in this book are so mind blowing you don't want to ever put it down, you aren't sure where the next "spot" will be?

Will the "red head" get her "duke"? You must read this one to find out, though this book "could" be a stand alone-I would so NOT recommend it to be... a MUST to read to the previous books : A Talent for Sin, Bound by Temptation, Taken by Desire BEFORE reading... you have to know about the entire "scandalous" family :)

Note: I do not put many "Spoilers" in my reviews because I believe you should read the book to fully enjoy it!

I believe this is the third novel in a series. I have not read the first two; however, that is not necessary as "What a Duke Wants" does well as a stand alone book. Lavinia Kent does nothing extraordinary with this novel. In fact, she conforms to all the prescribed Historical Romance dos, don'ts, and clichés.

In short: (this is a review, not a book synopsis) Runaway Isabella Masters, currently known as Isabella Smith and employed as a nursemaid, finds herself "moved" to the stables by some haughty Duke's employee, where she is trying to lull her wailing charge to sleep. It is there, in the stables, while muttering to herself about "covering cocks" that Isabella encounters Mark Smythe, the Duke of Strattington, who, as the book excerpt suggests, does not reveal his true identity. Thus, the not-so-Cinderella story begins.

Even though Lavinia Kent tried an engaging, comical opening to this novel, - the double entendre of the above mentioned "covered cocks" - she failed to capture my attention, as there was nothing original in that beginning; the small misunderstanding on Mark's part (about whose cock should be covered) was well anticipated and, therefore, neither humorous nor winning. And that is pretty much how the rest of the novel progresses, with attempts at originality that fail because of their predictability.

Isabella Smith, or Masters, or whatever is running from her past, from deeds done that hold dire consequences. She guards her secret to the end, unable to trust. How many such Historical Romance damsels in distress have we, the readers, met?
