4.0 out of 5 stars Great balance of secular and religious, March 4, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: What Is Easter? (Board book)
This book acknowledges and does not condemn the fun involved in the secular celebrations of Easter, including the Easter Bunny, but also smoothly points out that they are not the most important part. Succintly states the religious significance of the holiday. Would be nice to have a little more detail on that, but it summarizes neatly. Illustrations are pleasing. Some of the wording seems to tend the text more to a girl than a boy (ie. wearing a new Easter "dress"), but the pictures show both boys and girls (and changing those particular few words during read-aloud will not interfere with the rhyming). Also mentions an Easter parade and choir, which may not be common to all celebrations. On the whole, quite happy to have found this book. Will be giving to my one-year-old son for Easter, but expect my five-year-old daughter to have some interest as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Favorite Easter Book!, March 1, 2007

This review is from: What Is Easter? (Board book)
This is my two-year-old's favorite Easter book. He enjoys the rhymes and pictures. I like it because our family celebrates all the Easter traditions (egg hunts, the Easter bunny, etc), but I want my children to know that the true meaning of Easter is our Lord's resurrection!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelent explanation of traditions and truth, September 25, 2007
This review is from: What Is Easter? (Board book)
This is a cute book that explains in a kid friendly way that it's okay to believe in the Easter bunny and to like other things about Easter, but that the real reason for Easter is "all about God's Son".

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice book that fully explains the REASON for Easter., May 12, 2009
This review is from: What Is Easter? (Board book)
What is Easter?, written by Michelle Medlock Adams, uses simple rhyming verse to question the reason for this holiday. The text asks about bunnies and chocolate, eggs and new clothes; are these what Easter is all about? Halfway through the book, the answers begin. There the author explains that all of these things are nice and fun, but they're not why we celebrate. She tells of Jesus, God's Son, who came to earth "to die for everyone." He had to die in order to save us from our sin. After three days, He rose again. The author goes on to explain that Jesus now sits next to God in Heaven. "He wants to live inside you too and fill you up with love!" The book concludes by reiterating it's point: Easter is all about God's Son.

The illustrations by Amy Wummer are soft and sweet. They feature lots of spring colors and joyful faces.

What I Like: This is one of very few Easter books that actually explains the why of Jesus resurrection: that He died to save us from our sins. It also offers a brief, but important application: that we can invite Jesus to live in us and fill us with His love. Also, the illustrations are really cute.

What I Dislike: The text is a little lame in some spots, and the rhyme isn't always perfect.

Overall Rating: Very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Easter Book Ever!, May 17, 2008
This review is from: What Is Easter? (Board book)
My mother-in-law gave "What is Easter?" to my daughter two years ago. I held my breath when I read it the first time. Would this book attack my faith in Jesus? I wasn't sure.

I was happily surprised. Michelle Medlock Adams explains what Easter's all about in kid-friendly terms. It's a fun, gentle book that shows it's okay to eat chocolate bunnies on Easter and buy a new outfit, but that's not the point of Easter. Jesus is the point. It's now my favorite children's Easter book. I've even brought it with me to doctor's offices and read it aloud to my kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book about Easter, April 27, 2010

I want my daughter to grow up with the fun traditions I had as a child, but also understand the real meaning behind those fun times. This is a great was to teach children the real meaning of Easter. There aren't many children's books that talk about the death of Jesus. This book talks about Easter in a nice way that toddlers can understand and enjoy.

My daughter and I love to read this book together. She (a one-year-old) regularly brings it to me. I appreciate that it acknowledges the festivities and the spiritual significance of Easter. I want to teach my daughter about both and this book helps me do that. The illustrations are beautiful too. There's lots to point out and talk about with little ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great What Is? book, June 3, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: What Is Easter? (Board book)
After purchasing their What is Christmas book last year, I went ahead and ordered this one for Easter, too. Children can become so wrapped up in the all of the marketing that goes into these holidays and I wanted to have a book that I could read to mine to help her understand the true meaning and WHY we are actually celebrating. (It's not to keep Hallmark and the candy companies in business.) These are great, simple books with colorful illustrations good for holding their attention and keeping the focus on what (or rather WHO) Easter is about.
