Book reviewed by a dietitian and mother of a child with Crohn's disease,
This review is from: What to Eat with IBD: A Comprehensive Nutrition and Recipe Guide for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis (Paperback)
This book is an invaluable resource to those affected by IBD. The author is a registered dietitian with a Master's degree in nutrition who has had IBD since the age of nineteen. (I also have a Master's degree in nutrition and found all of her nutrition information to be accurate.) The first part of the book contains essential information as to how to achieve a nutritionally adequate diet despite the problems associated with IBD. The reader will learn which foods can cause inflammation and bowel irritation, which foods can nourish and heal the bowel, how to avoid food-borne illness, which nutrient supplements are necessary, and what forms of these recommended supplements are best absorbed.
The second part of the book contains over 50 kitchen-tested nutrient rich recipes that the entire family can enjoy. Recipes for tasty shakes are also included that can be used as meal-replacements when appetite is poor. As a parent of a child with Crohn's disease, I continually keep abreast of new materials on IBD. Unfortunately, I have found some deleterious dietary misinformation about IBD on the market. In contrast, I was so impressed with "What to Eat with IBD" that I contacted the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) to tell them how helpful I think this book would be.

My husband was just diagnosed with Crohn's. Well, he loves to cook and thought he would have to eat boring food. The recipes in this book ROCK! We are both happy campers. We're both eating healthier and the food is awesome! I recommend this book to anyone and especially those that have special diets. Oh yeah, and there was a lot a good information about IBD in the book. (You can tell which part thrilled me the most!)

Too general and not comprehensive,
This review is from: What to Eat with IBD: A Comprehensive Nutrition and Recipe Guide for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis (Paperback)
I've had ulcerative colitis for four years, and a few months ago I set my mind to getting myself off the medication while following proper diet. In the process, I purchased each book I found that dealt with IBD or healing through nutrition and gave their arguments a try. I found that there are many good books out there, but this is not one of them. Yes, it is simple and easy to follow, but is also lacking in so many things. First, the foods that the author recommends for healing include soy and wheat, which are problematic for many patients with IBD. Most people would recommend avoiding soy during an inflammation, period. More importantly, the author does not provide a holistic approach to healing the body as she only focuses her attention on diet. Dietary changes are very important, but so are other things that one can do to reduce stress and rest the body. I'd recommend David Klien's Self-healing Colitis and Crohn's, or even Breaking the Vicious Cycle which has it's own cult-like following.

Maybe a bit basic,
This review is from: What to Eat with IBD: A Comprehensive Nutrition and Recipe Guide for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis (Paperback)
You know, less is sometimes more. What I loved about this book as someone who is Newly Diagnosed with Crohn's Disease is that the author does not put a lot of technical stuff in the book. You don't have to read through pages of research on Crohn's and nutrition. She does say that she does not really explain the symptoms and sign's of Crohn's because, other books do it better.
Instead the book starts with a few pages from the author and why she is a dietitician, then a bit about Crohn's, Ulcerative Colitis and IBS. There might be a little about digestion and then she gets into what foods are more healing and hurtful. Her lists might not be exhaustive but, are enough to give you good choices and variety. Then thing is I don't need to know the how or why...I need to know what I can have for lunch...now. I wished that she addressed things like Juice and if Juicing vegetables is a good way to get in some vitamins and nutrients. But, all in all a very helpful book. The main part of the book is only about 56 pages with IBD friendly recipies at the end. She says much the same things that other books on the subject says, just simpler. It took me about an hour and a half to read all but, the recipies which means I can start using the information that much faster.

Very Limited Diet -- BUT IT WORKS!!!,

This review is from: What to Eat with IBD: A Comprehensive Nutrition and Recipe Guide for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis (Paperback)
This book makes a lot of sense; it gives a clear and detailed description of how various foods (particularly fiber) affects the digestive system. The book also offers suggestions of types of food that allow the digestive system to heal.
I have a case of Crohn's, which wasn't responding to 5 months of mesalamine treatments and antibiotics. Months of these medications did nothing to help me begin to heal, but after only two days on this diet, I began to notice significant improvement of all my Crohn's symptoms. Pain, frequency of movement, bleeding, low energy levels... all of these began to diminish immediately and I feel great now. The tricky part, it seems, is finding other types of foods I can eat without causing the flare to get bad again... I definitely recommend smoothies! Good luck! Oh, and don't bother with "Breaking the Vicious Cycle."

Great resource for IBD patients and families,

I just received this book yesterday, it's a great resource. As a nutritionist, I've done a great deal of research on what my son can eat since he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis three years ago. This book is right-on with my own research and something I will be sending to college with him next year, where he will have to cook his own meals. I am ordering another copy for my mother who "never knows what I can feed him"--now she'll have a place to start.

Best resource yet on IBD!,
This review is from: What to Eat with IBD: A Comprehensive Nutrition and Recipe Guide for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis (Paperback)
I have found this the best resource thus far on IBD. My favorite part is that there are recipes to try not just suggestions of foods to eat. She also lists the vitamins that each meal contains. All the recipes are very simple- no more than 6-8 ingredients. These recipes are great and I have made almost all of them. I am having a lot of fun cooking and my family is eating very well. I also like how she lists foods that heal and foods that hurt. My son was diagnosed with UC 5 years ago and I have been looking for something like this. My prayers were finally answered.

Excellent Guide to How to Eat Healthfully With IBD!!!,
By Amy (Washington, D.C.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: What to Eat with IBD: A Comprehensive Nutrition and Recipe Guide for Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis (Paperback)
As someone recently diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, I was very confused by conflicting advice on the Internet of what to eat and what to avoid with IBD. This book has proven EXTREMELY HELPFUL in guiding what to eat that will soothe the gut and what to avoid that may worsen the symptoms. The author provides clear lists of foods that heal and foods that hurt, which is VERY helpful in putting together shopping lists and also in knowing what questions to ask about the food I eat when at a restaurant. I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from IBD who wants to maintain a HEALTHY diet!

I bought this book for a friend whose husband was recently diagnosed with Crohn's Disease. She told me it has been of tremendous value to her in planning meals and making the necessary changes in his diet. She had read tons of material, which she had checked out of the library, and told me this book was the best of everything she had read.
