great debut, May 17, 2009
I first heard this album in late 06 when dgd first signed to rise records and they re-released this. It's a pretty short album but from the guitar opening in robot with human hair pt. 1 to the end of burning down the nicotine armoire pt. 1, I was completely impressed by this unknown band from sacramento.
In a scene saturated by 2002-era alexisonfire-influenced bands (a skylit drive, in fear and flames, etc.), dance gavin dance is a very fresh alternative to that. Because, although, especially in this album, they do have the contrasting harsh vocals courtesy of jon mess and the ridiculously amazing clean vocals of jonny craig, they come off with a very different sound. the sound comes from the dizzying guitar work courtesy of will swan and sean o'sullivan. To this day, i still don't know how to categorize these guys, but my best approximation is a very strong post hardcore influence with a little bit of soul, and r & b.
The only thing that i didn't like on this album was the production, mess's vocals seemed a little too distant, and with too much reverb. But seeing how this was a demo, more or less, i let it slide.
I'd recommend this album to virtually anyone, although if you're not a very big fan of harsh vocals (screaming), you might be a little put off.
Dance Gavin Dance's Whatever I say is royal ocean is one of the brightest spots in today's post hardcore scene.
4 out of 5 stars.

Short and sweet, August 25, 2008
Dance Gavin Dance.. what an amazing band this is. This cd is truley a work of art.
1) "What ever I Say is Royel Ocean" This is just an intro so it's not much but it does build up to the first song. 3/4
2) "The Robot With Human Hair Pt. 1" Starts out "kinda pretty" With Johny's voice it really sets the mood of the song and then they get to jammin and the screams come in. This has really good guitar work. 5/5
3)"The Robot Vs. Heroin Battle Of Vietnam" For the second song they keep up the upbeat and the great guitar work. Not my fav but still a strong song. 4/5
4) "Tidal Waves Breakfast, Lunch And Dinner" Starts out kinda slow.. really kinda sits the mood and then the screams come in and you really get a good sound for Johny's singin and you can almost feel his emotion. This is one of my fav songs on the album. I like the guitar in this. 5/5
5) "The Importance Of Cocaine" Starts off with just guitar playing a real mellow tune. and Johny doin what he does best, great vocals in this song. I feel the song is lacking something though.. 4/5
6) "The Robot With Human Hair Pt. 2" My fav on the cd. Starts with Johny just crying out and you can just feel the emotion. Awsome guitar work. 5/5
all and all this is an amzing peice of work. If your into any come of screamo or hardcore you have got to pick this up. This review is on my OWN opinion.

A Great Debut, February 9, 2007
This is a great band and a great cd. This band has a very unique sound that has the calibur of At the Drive-In and Alexisonfire. The only problem with this album is that all the material was all ready written and recorded before they got signed to Rise Records, Rise just re-released it. So, this to me does not show off the band's full potential. I highly recommend this cd and you should give it a listen. I just know that this band can do so much more and we should see it on their upcoming full length.
