A 'DREAMY' DOUBLE DOSE OF DAY!,
By
This review is from: What Every Girl Should Know / I Have Dreamed (Audio CD)
The double CD featuring the vocal expertise of Doris Day, "What Every Girl Should Know" and "I Have Dreamed" is yet another example of how skilled Day had become by the early 60's, after 20 years of singing professionally. In particular "I Have Dreamed" allows the listener to hear Day perform a decidedly mixed bag featuring songs by Kurt Weill,, Noel Coward, Sigmund Romberg and Richard Rodgers, among others. Day's treatment of the title song moved composer Rodgers so much that he penned a fan letter to her declaring her version of the number from "The King and I", the best he'd ever heard. "What Every Girl Should Know" features a decidedly mellow Doris Day, from the title song, through a very fine "Mood Indigo", an exquisite "Something Wonderful" and even a moving religious-based number, "The Everlasting Arms" with lyrics by Day's Christian Science Practitioner, Martin Broonees, husband of thee inimitable, long-legged delight, Charlotte Greenwood. Day's take on "What's The Use of Wond'rin" from "Carousel" is more upbeat than renditions of this song usually are, but it works. My personal favorite of the two albums contained herein is the aforementioned "I Have Dreamed". Doris Day's purity of tone and heartfelt warmth are so clearly in evidence. In particular her singing of Coward's hauntingly beautiful, "Someday I'll Find You" from "Private Lives" is flawless.

What Every Girl Should Know/I Have Dreamed is a very good Doris Day twofer CD that has all the songs from two of Doris' record albums entitled What Every Girl Should Know and I Have Dreamed. The quality of the sound is excellent and I like that artwork, too! I always like it when they incorporate the original record album artwork into the CD artwork."What Every Girl Should Know" stuns me with its beauty; Doris sings this with style and all her heart. Her voice is particularly rich, warm and very vibrant. I love it! "Mood Indigo" features Doris Day front and center--right where she belongs! Doris sings this classic pop vocal tune very well; and the elegant music that accompanies her complements her singing beautifully! There's also Doris singing out "When You're Smiling" as she swings gently to deliver this ballad with panache. The musical arrangement is also very pretty. "A Fellow Needs A Girl" gets the royal treatment from Doris so sings this with great sensitivity; and I really like "A Fellow Needs A Girl." Great! "Something Wonderful" comes from The King And I; and Doris does great justice to this number! Doris' rendition plays with the tempo at certain points to allow Doris to put her own stamp on this charming ballad. "I Believe In Dreams" places Doris squarely in the spotlight and the gentle big band style arrangement works wonders for this tune. "My Ship" is equally bright and Doris performs "My Ship" flawlessly. Listen also for Doris to outdo even herself on "All I Do Is Dream Of Yourself;" this classic love ballad sparkles like never before when Doris Day sings it! "I Have Dreamed" is a wistful, romantic ballad again from The King And I; and the original cast would have been proud of Doris for her fantastic rendition of this love song. "You Stepped Out Of A Dream" features a very pretty arrangement; the music is lovely and Doris never skips a beat. Doris, as usual, never sings a superfluous note. The album ends very nicely with Doris Day performing "Time To Say Goodnight." This was a great number for Doris; and just one listen proves why! Doris aces this without the slightest effort and this impresses me greatly. Doris Day deserves more recognition that she gets; and I can only hope that with the continued sales of her fine CDs she will get the kudos she deserves. This is an excellent album for Doris Day fans.

yet another quality Doris Day twofer,

This review is from: What Every Girl Should Know / I Have Dreamed (Audio CD)
This great twofer from the Collectables label comprises two of Doris Day's best albums of the late 1950's - 'What Every Girl Should Know', and 'I Have Dreamed'.'What Every Girl Should Know', of course, includes the memorable tune of the title, as well as a good array of songs like "Mood Indigo", "The Everlasting Arms", "My Kinda Love", "When You're Smilin'" and "Not Only Should You Love Him". There is also a rather-upbeat version of "What's the Use of Wond'rin'" from CAROUSEL. 'I Have Dreamed' of course includes the lovely KING AND I tune, and also includes "I Believe in Dreams", "All I Do is Dream of You", "Periwinkle Blue" and "You Stepped Out of a Dream". There is also a well-judged "My Ship" from LADY IN THE DARK, and a plaintive "Some Day I'll Find You" from the play PRIVATE LIVES. This reissue is a must-own for Doris Day fans.
