KUDO's,
This review is from: What Every Man Wants in a Woman, What Every Woman Wants in a Man: 10 Essentials for Growing Deeper in Love 10 Qualities for Nurturing Intimacy (Hardcover)
I purchased this book a few months ago when my then fiance and I were having troubles which eventually led to us breaking up. I bought the book because of the chapter on honesty. I read pieces to my fiance that explained how his lying made me feel and what it was doing to me. Unfortunately, he was not ready to listen. We broke up, but are now talking again and have sought counseling with our pastor. He has now read the book and wishes he had been open enough to read it sooner. After showing the book to our pastor, he is now going to read it as well and asked if I would like to teach a class/study session with the book so that other couples- unmarried or married who are struggling with similar issues can learn ways to work through their issues as well.
I do not agree with every single word of the book. But, I agree with enough of it to know that a couple who has been married for over 30 years, has raised that many children and all are successful members of society that they must be doing something right. As for the women who are having problems with the submission. Submission is about both people, not just the wife. After you experience "true" submission, you finally know just what God's intention for the sexual relationship is for. Too many of us are caught up in the everyday activities that we neglect our partners. If we spent a tenth of the time on our relationships that we spend on all the other stuff that consumes us..divorce would be a thing of the past.

Much in common with Muslim fundamentalists ...,
This review is from: What Every Man Wants in a Woman, What Every Woman Wants in a Man: 10 Essentials for Growing Deeper in Love 10 Qualities for Nurturing Intimacy (Hardcover)
From 'What every man wants in a woman':
'Do you know the difference between a woman with PMS and a snarling Doberman pinscher? The answer is lipstick. Do you know the difference between a terrorist and a woman with PMS? You can negotiate with a terrorist.' Guess he likes 'em barefoot, pregnant, and in the kitchen, where they belong. Maybe in a burkha as well? Aside from being rabidly homophobic, Hagee has a medieval view of women. He and the mullahs should get together and compare notes. Somehow, I just can't get a feeling of God's all-encompassing grace washing over me out of the pages of anything Hagee has written, or anything he has ever said.

I gave this book to my husband and will buy another for myself. I have read only part of it and already i know it has made an impact in my relationship. It is well balanced, hits the nail on the head. Parts of it might piss you off as a woman but you know it is the truth and the truth can be bitter to hear but if practiced brings happiness in marriage.

1 Book, Not 2,
By GTO (Phoenix, AZ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: What Every Woman Wants in a Man/What Every Man Wants in a Woman (Paperback)
What is essentially 1 ½ books in 1, this appears to be a fairly competent book written by Diana Hagee that the publisher was afraid wouldn't sell. So, they tacked on a series of ramblings by Ms. Hagee's more famous husband, John, and tried to promote the book as a comprehensive treatment of what men and women are looking for in a mate. John's section is really unfocused and does not give much insight for men. However, Diana's section is very organized and provides excellent instruction for both men and women. Using as an outline the top 10 things a woman wants in a man, based on surveys conducted at the Hagee's church, Diana provides practical advice about how women can foster these characteristics in their husbands as well as in themselves. Though feminist will not appreciate the advice and God's promises are at times turned into prosperity thinking, the relational advice is a great reminder to those recently married, as well as those who have been working at marriage for many years.

Already being familiar with the content of these books, I purchased "What a Man/Woman Wants" and "Love Languages" (the regular one and the one aimed at men) as a gift for a couple getting married in November. I gave it to them a few weeks before their wedding. They had given away their 'Love Languages' book to someone they knew who was married earlier this year and were very happy to receive a replacement. As for "What a Man/Woman Wants," they had heard about it and were excited to receive copies. It made my heart glad to see how happy they were with their presents.

This book is a Christian primer for those wanting to get married, and is coauthored by a pastor (John Hagee) and his wife, who each write half of the book from the male or female perspective. I found Hagee's oneliners and jokes tiresome after a while, but his advice is solid: love and respect your mate, and understand the differences between men and women. It was a good read, but I've read better books on relationships.
