Ages 6-8. The newest title in the What to Expect Kids series helps children and parents get through an occasionally scary experience. Angus the Answer Dog makes another appearance, suggesting a game or activity related to the visit (make a picture to give to the dentist), and answering one question per page. Questions cover everything, from "Why do I have to go to the dentist?" to "What's an X ray?" The text isn't meant for young children as it's quite detailed, but the cartoonlike artwork and the good advice it gives will make this an appealing book for browsing as well as a resource for parents wanting a sensitive way to ease their child into the dentist's chair. This book is good, except for one page, where the big heading reads "does going to the dentist hurt?". Just putting that suggestion out there can cause a kid to pause and go, hum... maybe a dentist is a scary thing. My 2.5 year old can't read - so I just say "what is going to the dentist like?" and then read on. The book has cartoonish drawings of numerous innocuos dental tools (mirror, scraper, squirter, polishing brush, etc.) and it covers the aspects of what a dental room looks like, what will happen at a check up appopintment. It is good, except that one part. Barney Goes to the Dentist is a better book.

This book isn't really fun to look at or read. I bought this to introduce my 3 year old to the dentist, but the book bored him and we've never even finished it. A year and a half later and he's never wanted to revist it. Try the Elmo or SpongeBob dentist books instead!
