A great book for kids,
By
This review is from: What is God Like? (Hardcover)
Kids ask tons of questions - about everything! They want to know how things are made and where things come from. They also want to know about God. In one of her more recent picture books - What is God Like? - prolific author Beverly Lewis answers many of the questions children ask in a way that's easy for them to understand. The questions include: Does God ever sleep? Why did God make people? Do you think He has enough love for everybody in the whole world?
These questions, and many more, are answered matter-of-factly during a conversation that takes place mostly between a brother and a sister. Their father left on a business trip. Before he left, he told his children, "...even when I'm not here, God is always with you." This leads to a discussion between the two siblings about all the things they have learned about God from their parents: that He made the animals, that He is everywhere all the time, that He knows when we've done something wrong, and that God wants us to obey His rules. The conversations are realistic and are complimented by Bible verses at the bottom of each two-page spread that relates to each aspect of God's nature. For instance, when the children talk about obeying God's rules, the Bible verse cited is Exodus 15:26: "I am the Lord your God. Listen carefully to my voice. Do what is right in my eyes. Pay attention to my commands. Obey all of my rules." At the end of the book is a page titled, "Teaching Your Child About God," offering ways to share your faith with your children. The watercolor illustrations by Pamela Querin are beautiful, vibrant, and realistic. What I Like: Everything. The text, and Bible verses, and illustrations work perfectly together to create a wonderful book for teaching children about God. It's simple to understand without being preachy. What I Dislike: Nothing. Age Appeal: The publisher suggests 4-8 as the appropriate age group for this book. I think the book has a wider appeal, more like that of 3-10-year-olds. Overall Rating: Excellent. Christine M. Irvin - Christian Children's Book Review

How do you explain God to a child?,

It is very difficult to explain God to a young child and this book certainly makes it much easier. Beverly Lewis does a wonderful job with this subject. I look forward to sharing this book with several young friends as well as a grandchild coming my way! Lewis also did a beautiful explanation of heaven for children with "What is Heaven Like". I am a church secretary and our ministers agreed to let these books be used as part of our children's program.

Ideal for opening an educational discussion about God between parents and children,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews

What Is God Like? is a children's picturebook designed to teach young people about the all-encompassing power and love of God. "Dad set his suitcase down and told us again about our Father in heaven. 'He's bigger and more powerful than anyone,' Dad began. 'And He loves you even more than I do. Can you imagine that?'" Gentle color illustrations and a brief biblical quote at the bottom of each page add the perfect touch to this wonderful book ideal for opening an educational discussion about God between parents and children. Highly recommended.

Making A Potentially Abstract God Accessible,
By Jennifer Bogart "@ Quiverfullfamily.com" (Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: What is God Like? (Hardcover)
Explaining God to small children can seem like a daunting exercise at times. After all, God isn't someone we can physically see, so He can seem like a very abstract person. Yet, He is a person that we are called to love with all that we are. We're also called - as parents - to teach our children to love Him.
What is God Like? written by renowned novelist Beverly Lewis, helps to make God more accessible to young children. Lewis covers many of the major traits or characteristics of God through a conversation that takes place over the course of an entire day between an older brother and younger sister. This warm, casual format presents theological truths with accuracy yet without intimidation, and is interest-holding enough for my four-year-old to sit through the entire book in one sitting. Scripture quotations on each page helps to under gird the points made within the text itself. Artist Pamela Querin's illustrations are simply marvelous! I'm not quite sure how she does what she does; if I had to guess I'd say a combination between watercolors and pastels. Whatever she's up to, the result is a breathtaking, multi-textured cascade of color filled with wonderful light and shading. Her work is realistic while still being obviously art, it's hard to capture in words, but we all enjoy these illustrations greatly. It's wonderful to find a children's picture book that takes God seriously and teaches children about Him while still holding great appeal for little ones. I'm very happy to have this book in our collection.

Kids Talk About God,
This review is from: What is God Like? (Hardcover)
This is a very nice book for children, to help them understand what God is like.
My kids really enjoyed it! Beverly Lewis gave a great explanation of many characteristics of God using a conversation between two children. Their father had left for a long work trip, and they were discussing the fact that even though he was not there, God is always with them. As they go through their day, they talk about the things their dad taught them about God, such as: He is smart, powerful, loving, and kind. I was impressed with the way the book portrays God as approachable, a Father who cares about things that happen in our daily lives. We can talk to him and have a personal relationship with Him. Each page included a verse that went along with the characteristic described. The illustrations by Pamela Querin were very well done, colorful, bright and appealing to young children. I would most certainly reccommend this book to any parent, or teacher looking for answers to their child's questions about God. I received this book free from Bethany House Publishers in exchange for my honest review.

The book is more conducive to hard copy and not eBooks. I downloaded and was disappointed to find this book was mainly pictures and limited in text.

Very good when a child starts to ask many questions about God...where he lives, what he looks like, how old is he, what does he do, etc. Beautiful pictures.
