Book Description

April 3, 2007

When the body of bored housewife and high-priced call girl Ginger Pass is found outside the most exclusive men's club in California, the other members of her self-help group—Polly, Kat, Charlotte, Dinah, and Justine—are convinced it was foul play. Determined to find a way to prove it, they track down the trio of rich, powerful men they know are responsible for their friend's death. Hidden behind walls of money, connections, and respectability, these men seem to be untouchable. But like Robin Hood's merry men, King Arthur's knights, and the Girl Scouts rolled into one, the adventurous and brave quintet of women will risk everything to bring these men down.

They know what will happen if they fail. But Polly, Kat, Charlotte, Dinah, and Justine don't count on the ways their lives will change when they succeed. What goes around comes around . . . and Ginger's friends may finally get the lives they most want.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Diamond's sparkling debut, five determined L.A. women—Polly, Kat, Dinah, Justine and Charlotte—set out to avenge the murder of their friend, Ginger, a society matron turned high-class call girl, whose body is found outside the Palatine Club's men's only country compound after a paid assignation turns deadly. Getting justice for Ginger means focusing on those responsible for the crime and coverup: L. Walker "Loose" Cannon, a state senator high on "family values"; Mitchell Reinhart, a high-profile lawyer known as "Mr. Divorce"; and Milo Till, a brilliant real estate developer and financial whiz. The avengers don't wear capes or use supernatural powers to deliver justice, relying instead on individual expertise in such fields as art, investing, law and medicine as well as good old chick chutzpah. Careful research, clever plotting and credible characters enhance this intelligent vengeance quest. (Jan.)

From Booklist

Former Los Angeles Times writer Diamond has set her first novel among the privileged of L.A. Ginger Pass is the bored wife of a millionaire businessman. She handles her boredom by becoming a high-priced prostitute. Among the few who know her secret are the five women in her therapy group: Charlotte, a lawyer; Kat, an upscale gym-spa owner; Dinah, a doctor; Justine, a county assessor; and Polly, a stock-market whiz. When Ginger dies just outside the fence of an exclusive men's club, the authorities are too quick to rule it an accident. Appalled, the women get the names of the men she was with, including a senatorial candidate, a high-powered divorce lawyer, and a big-shot land developer, and look for their weak spots. Then, they set out to avenge Ginger's death. Along the way, the women find new strength to make changes in their own lives. The pace is a little slow, allowing for the backstories of the five avengers and their personal development. And maybe there are a few convenient coincidences. But the book manages to keep the reader invested and rooting for this team of women to the end. Elizabeth Dickie

5.0 out of 5 stars Satisfying story of revenge, December 8, 2008
This review is from: What Goes Around (Kindle Edition)
What an enjoyable book! I didn't really know what to expect as I started reading but it was great fun and also at times thought-provoking.

The story follows five women, members of a self-help group, who are shocked by the death of one of the members. Polly, Kate, Charlotte, Dinah and Justine believe the death was foul play and very quickly discover the three men they believe responsible. They then vow to get their revenge on these men and set about investigating their lives to find their weak spots.

What could have been a rather distasteful concept (seeking vengeance) was actually very well written and heartwarming. The women each have different skills and influences and we watch one of them in a gentle romance and the others finding new zest for life or ideas for the future. Although I felt the characters were well written I occasionally found it difficult to distinguish between Dinah and Charlotte and I found one or two plot improbabilities a little too convenient. Overall, however, this was an excellently-written and interesting book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Literate and a Gem, September 1, 2007
This review is from: What Goes Around: A Novel (Hardcover)
The reader of What Goes Around enters a participatory adventure with five characters, smart women who are resolute in wanting to avenge the murder of a friend. They plan their revenge not simply as personal payback, but as legitimate justice. Their targets are three powerful men who otherwise won't be held responsible. These men are protected by wealth and position, but if they can't be brought to justice, the victim's friends will bring justice to them. As satisfying as seeing the "good revenges" work out are the self-discoveries the women make in facing their own fears and dangerous situations.

I think Susan Diamond is an outstanding writer, presenting serious themes of public and private life, privilege and morality, and the power of friendship. Outstanding also is the aura of Los Angeles. The novel is a real page-turner: consequential, intelligent, witty, and yes, downright funny. What a surprise and pleasure is this gem!
