A must for the Animal Training Impaired!,
By A Customer
This review is from: What All Good Dogs Should Know: The Sensible Way to Train (Howell Reference Books) (Paperback)
I have never trained a dog before and know little to nothing about training puppies or dogs. My daughter (a real dog/animal lover) just got an impossible dog that my husband and I were considering ridding our house of, when my neighbor gave us this truly honest and complete book on how dogs think and the appropriate training for them to be good pets. We had no clue how to turn our nightmare around without devastating our child. The book is written so clearly and the procedures are so affective, Little Rosa is slowly becoming a part of our family and will probably stay with us for the long term. Unlike most training manuals, this book explains exactly what is happening in the dog's mind and what is expected. If the book is closely followed the dog enjoys the guiding and will be kept safe, and the owners will enjoy the dog. Highly recommended for anyone that hasn't got a clue how dogs should be treated to obtain likeable pets. Thank you to the Mantell family for giving us this book.

This book has been adopted as the manual for many obedience classes. I've been teaching dog obedience for years, and this book is my most useful tool. It expains most aspects of owning a dog, in easy to understand terms. I recommend it highly, and give it to all of my clients. The pictures are GREAT and very funny.

The absolute best book for a new dog owner.,

This review is from: What All Good Dogs Should Know: The Sensible Way to Train (Howell Reference Books) (Paperback)
This book gives the new dog owner a humorous and commonsense way to train a new puppy. The authors take the dog's eye view of training and help the trainer to see what they are doing from the dog's perspective. The cartoons are excellent and as I have found out the Volhard method works like no other!

Great training book for adults as well as kids,

This book covers all the basics and explains how the dog views the trainer's actions. The chapters are short and concise with a summary at the end of each recapping the essentials. Throughout the chapters are humorous pictures that really get the point across. My 7 year old daughter read this and found it helpful and funny as well. A great book to read BEFORE getting the puppy so you can be prepared. It is very straightforward and easy to understand.

This is one book that every dog owner, or potential dog owner, should buy! It doesn't matter if you have a Rottweiler, a Chihuahua, or just a good old Heinz 57 dog, this book is for all dogs. Cute illustrations and sound advice on how to make your dog the good doggie citizen of the year abound in this book. It addresses common issues like housebreaking, walking on a leash nicely, crate training, and much more. I highly recommend this book!

GOOD, but not GREAT.,

This review is from: What All Good Dogs Should Know: The Sensible Way to Train (Howell Reference Books) (Paperback)
This is a good, basic book about dog training. Some of the insite into why dogs do what they do and what they are really thinking is great information to have. But, if you are serious about dog training it will take more than just this one book to give you all the base knowlege you need. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in dogs though. The information it has is accurate and useful and the illustrations are fun and educational. I agree with the person who said it would be a great dog training book for younger children to start with. The illustrations make this book very understandable for everyone. Add it to your collection for the pictures and basic information, but do keep reading because there are more comprehensive dog training manuals out there.

i have worked with dogs -- from pet poodles to belgian malinois patrol dogs -- and this book applies to all of them. i think the most important thing owners learn is that obiedience is not a cure-all, but a beginning for the owner to learn how to teach their campanion good manners. it is a loving book that serves the pet first and foremost in dispelling myths the owner might hold near and dear.

I read this book and used it's training tips and obedience training sequences, and not only is my dog an excellent listener, he is more than willing to learn because it is all positive. I have never had a dog learn so fast and be happy about it! this book gets a 10+.

This book has been selected by the Hamilton Dog Training Club (Hamilton, Ohio, USA) for use in its puppy and beginner classes. As a veterinary technician, I find this text useful in explaining to owners why dogs behave the way they do and the best way for the owner to interact with their pets. Janet Lazarus, RVT

A must for new puppy owners!,

So easy to follow & understand! And, the cartoons throughout are great!Without this book, I would have been completely clueless when it came to getting our first puppy housebroken & trained. Because of this book, we now have two fantastic dogs (one who is 1 year and one at 6 mos. old). This book completely debunks so many age-old dog training myths - how to dicipline, not rewarding inappropriate behavior by accident...etc. I would have done a lot wrong without this book! Very humane, thoughtful & insightful into the world of puppies and dogs. If you've ever wondered "why does my dog do that?" you'll find the answer here. Bravo to the authors! |
