5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great single, February 12, 2005

This review is from: What Happens Tomorrow Pt. 2 (Audio CD)
"What Happens Tomorrow" is a great song, and it's nice to see that radio is giving it a chance. The first Duran single ("Sunrise") from their newly released (2004) album ASTRONAUT (which features the original lineup) was a hit, and this song deserves the same treatment. "What Happens Tomorrow" reminds me a lot of "Ordinary World"...not by the sound of it, but in the way the song starts off simply but builds to a dramatic finish. The lyrics also seem to collect a lot of the emotion and feelings of these uncertain times.

"Silent Icy River" is basically something the band seems to have concocted in the studio...playing around with different sounds and snippets, but the lyric is quite catchy. Simon LeBon repeats it over and over, and the middle part of the song includes the lyrics that were dropped from "What Happens Tomorrow"....the 'time is a ribbon' part.

I'm not usually a big fan of remixes, but the treatment "What Happens Tomorrow" gets in this remix is very listenable, so it's a nice rarity to have.

This is recommended if you can find it, it's strictly a European import. If you can't, the ASTRONAUT album is highly recommended...it beat my (and many professional music critics) expectations. By the way, if you can see these guys live...be sure to attend. They are an excellent live band!

2.0 out of 5 stars Great song- but extras are unfulfilling, March 15, 2005

Being a Duran completist, I had to have both parts to this cd single. Sadly, the Harry Peat Remix of this amazing song lacks any energy. It rips the passion & urgency completely out & turns "What Happens Tomorrow" into a trancey, chilled-out lounge-fest. Boring.

"Silent Icy River" is less than 3 minutes long and is only a fraction of a song. It's merely a piece of music built around the 3rd verse of "What Happens Tomorrow," which was ultimately edited from the album version. Interesting & artsy- but a true B-side would have been nice.

The video for "What Happens Tomorrow" is also included here. A young couple in love lay atop their car in an empty mall parking lot & look at the stars. The starry sky then turns into Duran Duran. The band looks great, but this is not exactly their brightest concept.

I love Duran Duran, but someone needs to hook them up with better remixers & video directors. This does not live up to their legacy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!, January 15, 2008

"What Happens Tomorrow" is probably one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in the recent years. The message is powerful, and the music is just flawless. How many of today's pop stars and hip-hop artists can say something like, "You've got to believe, it'll be alright in the end?" It's motivational, not encouraging violence or other bad behavior, like so many young artists are putting out these days.

I fell in love with this song the moment I first heard it off "Astronaut," so why did I get this single if I already have the CD? For the extras!

I enjoyed "silent icy river." In my opinion, that deserves to be a song all on its own. A little piece from the original song, and later taken out. It was done well, and I wished it had received more recognition. Well done, guys! There's nothing here to argue about. "Holding on to watch you believe..." a very powerful line repeated throughout this song, makes me not to give up on the things that I believe in. The remix was a hit, taking the orginal song and putting a funky beat to it. I never had a remix before from these guys, man, I almost missed out on this one. And of course, the video. I don't care if you didn't like the video, but any video that has Simon in it, I will not pass up. He's so beautiful...

I recommend this to those who like this song, but don't want the whole album just for the one song. Or, if you're a fan looking for new things to hear that you haven't known about. Get it! "Silent icy river" is a masterpiece! Thank you guys!
