5.0 out of 5 stars Funny and informative! Lots of good advice and laughs!
I got this book from my future in-laws, and they must have read my mind. If you just got engaged and you need advice on how to prepare for the "big day," check this book out. It's got tons of practical information, but it's fun to read. It's a how-to guide for guys, who everyone forgets has to also do things to get ready for the wedding day. The author has...

2.0 out of 5 stars Slightly useful but offensive
My fiance bought me this book thinking it would be helpful.

To be fair, there were a few useful tips in the book but the assumption that all prospective bridegrooms are drooling, sportheads who are only trying to figure out the best way to have sex during engagement is a bit simplistic.

That bugged me but what really got under my skin is the constant reminders that...

It's got tons of practical information, but it's fun to read. It's a how-to guide for guys, who everyone forgets has to also do things to get ready for the wedding day. The author has obviously been through the wedding thing at least once, and he definitely wants us to have fun and not take it all too seriously. I laughed out loud reading this book!

My fiance bought me this book thinking it would be helpful.

To be fair, there were a few useful tips in the book but the assumption that all prospective bridegrooms are drooling, sportheads who are only trying to figure out the best way to have sex during engagement is a bit simplistic.

That bugged me but what really got under my skin is the constant reminders that the bride is a neurotic, materialistic, hormonally challenged, psychotic was outright offensive. Has this guy ever met a woman? Any male with half a brain knows better than to even bring up PMS - this twit revels in it.

He also assumes that no man is interested in or willing to participate in wedding planning, site selection, food, wine, or even his own tuxedo (or whatever he's wearing to his wedding). My fiance was overjoyed when I told her that I wanted to be involved in the site selection, menu, wine choice, that I would handle clothing for myself and my groomsmen, and that I would take care of the invitations.

We aren't living in the stoneage and I didn't club her over the head and drag her back to my cave.

I'm sort of wondering if Mr. Mitchell has ever met a woman, much less married one.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I purchased this book for my fiance, and he thoroughly enjoyed it. Frankly, so did I; Jeff read a good deal of the book aloud to me. The book couched great insight and advice in fun terms (i.e., wedding planning as a game). Jeff and I both had simple, civil ceremonies for our first weddings; we are doing something much more formal this time, and Jeff got a great deal of useful information from this guide. We both recommend it highly to grooms (first-time or otherwise).

This book gave me some great advice. Being a guy who likes to know what is going on, I was driving my fiancee crazy and myself crazy. After reading this book, I decided to sit on the sidelines and step up only when called upon. The book compares the groom-to-be's job to a kicker on a football team. Oh, this is so true!

I appreciate John Mitchell's sense of humor. I can relate to the scenarios that he amusingly describes relating to wedding planning and dealing with the "wonderful bride-to-be" (and future mother-in-law). I would recommend this to any guy brave enough to face the wedding planning insanity!

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart Take on Marriage, April 5, 2005
This review is from: What the Hell Is a Groom and What's He Supposed to Do? (Paperback)
Genius insight into the life of a wedding. I read a bunch of 'how to' book and this one tops all. Anyone who has gone through the process can look at this book and find the humor. A very helpful guide to getting married.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wedding Survival Guide, April 16, 2007
This review is from: What the Hell Is a Groom and What's He Supposed to Do? (Paperback)
This book was given to me as an engagement gift by a very dear friend. Going through the engagement process without this book must be like venturing into a dark cave without a flashlight.

Mitchell's book helped me to prepare for and anticipate the many ups and downs often experienced during the wedding planning process. His comical stories and insightful hints helped me to avoid many political land mines and spared me countless nights on the couch wondering why my future bride was so mad at me. With a smile and often a funny antidote, I learned to defuse these little bombs before they ever got close to exploding.

Thanks to my friend for the great gift and to the author for taking the time to write this important survival manual.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great First Step for Your Groom, January 30, 2002

I purchased this for my fiancee just after we became engaged. The book is written very light heartedly and with a tone that will allow any groom with a sense of humor, who's not sure what the heck he's gotten himself into, a first glance at what's in store for him. I found this book an excellent way to ease my fiancee into the planning stages of the wedding. He actually read and enjoyed it also, throwing out snippets he had read at different stages in the planning process.

I picked this up since it was one of only two guy-oriented wedding books I could find at the bookstore. There are a few helpful pages in here, especially for those of us that haven't been to a lot of weddings and need a refresher on the different traditions and customs of weddings. So, you get some helpful reminders (who to thank, etc.), but I think the author's attitude is pretty old-fashioned and to some people, could indeed be offensive. His "right of first refusal" theory -- let your fiance do all the work, but retain a right of "first refusal" where you can override her decisions seems like a recipe for disaster. At least, when I jokingly read those passages to my fiance, she was NOT amused.
