Some of my favourite artists and tracks have been given a "new" sound that does not destroy the image of the original.I bought this album for "Summer Breeze", but now that I have listened to it many times I am very happy with the whole album. Its great to hear Nicolette Larson again as well as George Benson.

New Life for Tired Classics,

I grew up listening to this music in its original form in my Cutlass. As these songs have become the staples of soft rock stations and elevators, I've moved on and only occasionally hear them. And when I do, some of them just seem so incredibly old and tired - still great tunes, just tired. NOW, I can listen to them over and over again and I am diggin it!

This remix collection is a real treat for fans of club culture and 70s radio hits, the best of both worlds. The big draw here seems to be the remix of "Summer Breeze" by Seals & Crofts, which appeared in a television commercial. The rest of the album is pretty solid, too, the standouts for me being "Dream Weaver" by Gary Wright and a surprisingly hot mix of Todd Rundgren's "Hello It's Me". Strangely enough, one of the least of the tracks is the mix of Tower of Power's "What Is Hip", which titled the collection.
Part of the success here is because all of the remix artists were working with the original vocals, with the one exception of Rod Stewart's "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy". Apparently the master tapes are either lost or unusable, so Stewart re-recorded the vocals specifically for this project. He also did a super job of recreating the tone and phrasing of his original vocals. I only have one complaint, and that's the inclusion of Devo's "Whip It". It's an OK mix, but it's incongruous with the rest of the selections, which were mostly AM radio favorites in the 70s. While "Whip It" is also from the same decade, it's more closely associated with New Wave and not the 70s cheese represented here.

What Is Hip Is Pretty Hip!,

Well I really enjoyed listening to this CD especially the remix of Summer Breeze by Seals and Crofts. Listen To The Music by The Doobie Brothers is not to shabby either although they could have mixed in the catchy guitar riff a little more in the remix. The remix of Rod Stewart's Do Ya Think I'm Sexy is still sexy but I wasnt to thrilled about the remix of Whip It by Devo. I think the original is better. I enjoy listening to new mixes of popular songs as well as new versions of them by other artists. A good song is a good song, no matter who records it.

JUST BUY IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,

This review is from: What Is Hip: Remix Project 1 (Audio CD)
I first heard this CD last year at a friends' house. He had bought it whilst in Las Vegas on a buisness trip. I immediately reprimanded him for only purchasing one copy !
I just had to buy this for my personal collection. It is so rare nowadays to have remixes which don't completely butcher the original. This project was very well done. I played the music at the same friend's house at his annual Old Year's nite house party; when I slipped the Doobie Brothers into the mix the crowd went absolutely ballistic ! The rest of the album is excellent. Just "Listen to the Music" !!

GREAT COMPILIATION!,

Wow, this is a great compilation of tunes here. A bunch of tunes I grew up with in the '70s but the remixes have a cool fresh edge to them but don't stray too far from the original. Totally diggin on it!

WHAT IS HIP?...IS THIS CD.,

What is Hip is so awesome, you will crave Vol 2 and every cd in this hope to be released series. The song list is like a Greatest Hits package with some of the "hippest" sounds of the 70's but remixed into a feel of tranquility...as if you were sitting on the beach watching the waves roll over your feet and totally engulfed in a sound and vibe that you'll want to play over and over again. Check out the song list, listen to the samples and imagine it pumping through your speakers that will have your next party knowing just "What is Hip!"

FUN CD!!,

I am a digital dj and it is hard to find remixes that aren't glorified house tracks. The songs on here are a great mix of some oldies, that have been handled carefully as to leave the song intact yet spice it up with a modern hip hop beat. I am very pleased with this buy and am looking for others.....Z-trip rocks.

Move it,
This review is from: What Is Hip: Remix Project 1 (Audio CD)
This Cd makes you want to move. I like the songs that they have chosen to remix, and I believe (I hope) that this is the start of a new series. While I am listening to the CD I think of other songs that would be great to hear remixed with the same positive happy(hip groove)that comes across. Here is the best part...I have been playing the CD for the last couple of months at my studio, and while I was watching the trailer for MR.and Mrs Smith "Express yourself" one of the remixes on the CD came on. How hip is that? Great fun and uplifting music that people will ask about as they sing along to the classics.
Please don't stop, I need more of this type of music to play at my business, people feel so good they stay longer and buy more, cha-ching! I will even sell the Cds from my store, just keep them coming. |
