Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Author and MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) speaker Carden opens her slim text by telling Christian women what they already know: they're too busy for their families, themselves and, most especially, their husbands. Carden (co-author of God Things Come in Small Packages) offers a to-the-point primer on how to bring romance, tenderness and passion to a marriage gone stale. Using the scripture text found in Matthew 6:21, "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also," Carden challenges women to consider their husbands' needs first and in so doing, they will find their treasure in a marital relationship that exceeds previous experience and expectation. She offers counsel on respecting one's spouse, allowing needed breathing room, recapturing the essence of being the beauty in a husband's heart, cherishing chivalrous acts and making love last a lifetime. Although each chapter offers thoughtful take-aways, Carden's perspective on the need for solitude is especially helpful as she describes men who need both closeness and time alone in order to recharge and come back ready to love their families. Many evangelical Christian women will appreciate Carden's intelligent, wise advice.

Review

"Interspersed with personal vignettes and references to other works of interest, Carden offers up advice on husband "how-to" on the topics of respect, prayer, giving him breathing room, putting some new spark in your marriage, sex and friendship, looking your best for him, taking time out to relax and play, staying away from jealous thoughts, forgiveness and chivalry. Magic and magical...those words seem to jump out from the pages when I read the book. I thought at first the author simply overused them, but later I realized that this little book simply "owned" them as the book itself was a bit "magical." Easy to read, thoughtful and very well put together I think the author did a masterful job. (Deb Fowler Roundtable Reviews )

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Right for Every Wife, March 24, 2007
This review is from: What Husbands Need: Reaching His Heart and Reclaiming His Passion (Paperback)
Bought this because I heard about it on Christian radio. It is set from a sort of different point of view than I can relate well to. The husbands in this book are the driven, crazy about success, work way too many hours, gone all the time types. I can see how most guys sort of fit some sub-mold of that, at least, so I did finish it. It is a short book, an easy read. The book has entire chapters devoted to advice on how it might be good if you were your husband's friend instead of critic and how it helps if you keep your looks up. I was looking for something deeper.

4.0 out of 5 stars a good book!, May 23, 2006
By
This review is from: What Husbands Need: Reaching His Heart and Reclaiming His Passion (Paperback)
"...It is time to turn our hearts back...time to look upon our greatest treasure, our husbands, with fresh and tender eyes. It's time to reclaim our marriages."

With this thought, author Judy Carden, takes the reader on a journey to discover how God desires their marriages to be; how they can be the helpmate they were designed to be. Filled with quotes from men the author surveyed, this small book is full of practical tips and help that encourage the godly wife to reach her husband's heart and reclaim his passion.

From chapters on respect and prayer to ones on romance and cherishing his chivalry, Carden has included true stories that demonstrate the principles she is trying to impart. Each short section deals with important areas in every marriage.

Judy Carden did a wonderful job pulling together information and inserting sensible suggestions throughout What Husbands Need. The main focus of the book is to wives whose husbands are Christians. The quotes appeared to be from godly men, thus leaving a gap for the wife whose husband is not a Christian. Despite this omission, there are many guidelines to assist any wife, whether her husband is a Christian or not.

I could see that the author has the desire to help women "transform their mundane marriage into a magical, vibrant image of God's plan for the contemporary covenant marriage" as she states on the back cover. This is a book you would enjoy reading.

Armchair Interviews says: Be aware this advice is best read by women in marriages where both are Christian.

5.0 out of 5 stars "What Husbands Need" is What Women Need!, April 7, 2006
By
This review is from: What Husbands Need: Reaching His Heart and Reclaiming His Passion (Paperback)
Judy Carden has an incredibly inviting and unintimidating writing style, which is just one of the things that makes this book so wonderful. Her thoughts in "What Husbands Need" are encouraging, heartwarming, and thought provoking. The attitude of Carden's advice provide a feeling of understanding to the woman who is striving to tackle so many aspects of life at the same time- work, family, marriage- and end up feeling tired and lost from time to time. "What Husbands Need" has a comforting tone of actual unity in it, as Carden includes herself as someone who can constantly learn from God's love and purpose for life, love, and marriage. In a world of condescending self help books, Carden's compassionate approach is a literary breath of fresh air. An added bonus to the long list of benefits that "What Husbands Need" gives the reader, Carden's anecdotes and suggestions can be used as an important learning tool for single women as well as married ones. The single woman who is still waiting for God to complete His promise of true love can, in the mean time, use Carden's book as a prepatory guide for her future role as a loving wife.

"What Husbands Need" is a delightful and fulfilling read that all women can appreciate!
