These two words could be used to describe Chantal herself, her voice, and her music. Just by listening to this cd, one can tell that Chantal does take her music very seriously (as her lyrics are always meaningful), but, at the same time, constructs it with a relaxed approach. With her crystal-clear soprano and uncomplicated production, Chantal's music is somewhat of a rare find these days. She opts to not involve various computer technologies available today that are so often used to 'enhance' the listening experience. This stripped down approach is very refreshing indeed. This method is actually the very essence and roots of all music. It's pure, clean, and unfussy. One listen is more than enough to make anyone a Chantal fan!

Somewhere along the line, "pop" became a dirty word for a lot of people. It wasn't ever thus. There was a time, when, say, Paul McCartney's "poppy" tendencies complemented the edgier Lennon material beautifully. Or Marty Balin's pop-soul effectively counterbalanced Grace Slick's experimentalism and Paul Kantner's bombast. I'm new to Chantal Kreviazuk's music, but I already can see (in the reviews posted below) that there are different camps even among her fan base, with some embracing this most recent album's pop sheen and others yearning for the simpler production and songwriting of her two previous albums.

Well, I am eager to hear some of the earlier stuff myself, but it's hard to believe that the gorgeous pop of her third album is somehow lacking. I understand why people want to compare her to Sarah MacLachlan and other Lilith ladies, but I keep hearkening back to a much earlier time. WHAT IF IT ALL MEANS SOMETHING reminds me of nothing so much as the Beatles circa "The White Album," a time when they were exploring the sonic possibilities of the studio and beginning to tailor their songwriting to same.
The songs are richly evocative, but still fundamenatally hooky pop. Somewhat prosaic titles ("Waiting," "Time," "In This Life," etc.) belie the intelligent lyrics and imaginative arrangements. I always try to avoid the standard critical line about there not being a "bad track on the album" (are there supposed to be?), but WHAT IF IT ALL MEANS SOMETHING? is a particularly satisfying record. Each song is not just pretty good, but heartfelt, inventive and memorable. Who could ask for more (and hope to get it)?

Interesting that some of the Amazon reviewers on this page talk about her "crystal clear soprano," while others complain about (or alternately, praise) her vocal "distortions." Can both be right? Sort of reminds me of the kind of commentary Cyndi Lauper, Kate Bush and other singers of considerable vocal and stylistic range often get. Yeah, they can sing pretty--and they also experiment with various degrees of harshness and distortion when they feel the songs call for it. Some will find Chantal Kreviazuk's vocal at least occasionally too mannered, but her affectations are honest artistic choices (agree with them or not), reflective of a thoughtful and intelligent artist.

Like Bush and Lauper, in fact, Kreviazuk is likely to develop a substantial cult following--along with a fair number of fair-weather fans who will remain reluctant to follow her wherever she chooses to go. But like Bush, Lauper--and, yes, the Beatles--hers is a restless artistic temperament. She will continue to grow and develop--that much is clear.

While looking for some new CDs to listen to on a recent trip, I came across Chantal Kreviazuk's "What If It All Means Something" and decided to give it a try. It's my new favorite.

Some female singers scream. Some have raspy voices. Some are soulful, poetic, and have angelic voices. Chantal is in the last category. Her voice is strong and emotional, yet delicate and full of spunk. I've never heard anything quite like it and am sure that I won't for quite some time.

Now for the songs: I'm a fan of artists who are actually that. I like people who write their own material as a reflection of what is actually going on in their lives. This album is a beautiful quilt created out of Chantal Kreviazuk's life. All of the songs are amazing, but I feel like some deserve spotlight recognition:

In This Life: With a catchy melody, easy-to-relate-to lyrics, and an overall great vibe, this will become a quick favorite.

Time: Few songs have described my life so accurately. The tune is about all of the wasted days we spend moping over things that will never be. It seems like this one is everywhere - on ABC Family's "Lucky Seven", in the film "Uptown Girls", etc. It's a great tune that you will find both uplifting and touching.

Flying Home: We've all lost loved ones, but few artists have ventured to write so wholeheartedly about losing a loved one to suicide. The song is touching, heartfelt, and highly emotional - yet not angry or accusing.

Feels Like Home: This is a bonus track not featured on amazon's tracklisting, but it is on this album. As far as love songs go, it's powerful and realistic.

There are so many fantastic tunes on this album that I'd love to go through them all - but it would really better if you could hear them for yourself. Buy this one. You'll have a new favorite.

A music fan from Atlanta was asking where he could find "Feels Like Home" by Chantal Kreviazuk. In response to his question, Chantal recorded it on the "Dawson Creek" cd as well as "How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days" cd from the motion picture by the same name. Hope this helps in your search. FYI: She was also just featured on the reality show "First One To The Alter" and sang "Feels Like Home."

I've been saying for a few years that Chantal Kreviazuk is probably the most heard unknown Canadian artist, possibly in the world. With her appearance on the huge 1998 CD Armageddon and her singing the theme to NBCs Providence, as well as appearances on other TV shows and soundtracks, the odds that you have never heard Chantal's wonderful voice is pretty slim. So what does Chantal have to offer?
Well, her third CD has something for just about everyone. Whether you're new to her music or an old fan, this CD is for you. It's mainstream friendly enough to appeal to fans of Britney Spears and Celine Dion, emotional enough for fans of Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan and everyone in between.
The guys between Nelly Furtado's first CD produced the instantly catchy 'Ready For Your Love'.
Michelle Branch lends a voice to the perfect track 'Waiting', which I think has "hit" written all over it.
Chantal also experiments, for the first time, with guitar, which she plays on some of the tracks, and it's also the basis of two songs, 'In This Life' and 'Time'.
With amazing albums already behind her, Chantal is showing us that there's much more to her than just a piano, so pick up this CD and allow yourself to find that there really is meaning.

Chantal Kreviazuk finally released her new album WHAT IF IT ALL MEANS SOMETHING in Canada in November 2002 and later in the US just recently in April 2003. It's been a long three year wait since COLOUR MOVING AND STILL was released. Chantal fans will love this one. She opens with the inspiring song "In This Life". "Time" is my favorite song on the album, the arrangement and lyrics work well, very touching and beautiful song. "Flying Home" is a very sad, but beautiful song. "Ready For Your Love" and "Weight of the World" are a bit different for Chantal, trying new things, but very good. "Miss April" is a fun tongue in cheek song. If you are looking for the introspection found on her first album, try "Turn The Page". The title track is addictive with its chorus and "Julia" is a nice song about Julia Roberts. "Waiting" is a GREAT song featuring Michelle Branch on background vocals. I hope she breaks through to the US, she has so much talent. Give this one a try!

I have to say I am newbie Chantal fan, I rememeber hearing that "Leaving on Jet Plane" cover she did on the radio 3 or 4 years ago, and then early this year, I heard "In This Life" on the radio and I was like wow what a song.
I then downloaded "Feels Like Home" and I loved it, and decided to buy her new album. I listen to it on the train from work to school everyday. The first 6 songs, I love, "Ready for your Love" is a little annoying, I usually skip that and "Miss April". "Flying Home" is the saddest, most beautiful song I've ever heard. I really recommend this CD to anyone, the piano and her voice are so soothing, theres just something about her style that really appeals to me. I just bought "Under these Rocks and Stones" (her debut)and I only listened to it once and was a little disappointed, I definitely like "What If it All Means Something" much better.

I've been a fan since I've heard "Surrounded" on her debut album "under these rocks and stones". All of her songs has that personal and honest quality. Although I miss the sound of her piano on this album, going to one of her concerts is totally
an other experience. She's not like any other artists on piano. We feel that she puts her heart into every song she performs. Every song is emphasized emotionally when she sings in front of you. I recommend you to buy this album and her two previous if you wanna hear real music that comes from the heart. This album, though, we feel like for the first time, she's allowing herself to really enjoy the moment and be happy. 10/10 you won't be disappointed!

In the U.S, Chantal Kreviazuk has had far more soundtrack appearances than radio play. Judging from the slickly produced and instantly digestible tracks that stuff "What if it all Means Something," it seems as though she's finally figured out what's paying her bills.

Gone are the darker shadings of her earlier work; every song on this disc sounds as though it's been intentionally written and recorded for an upcoming Julia Roberts flick. (The aforementioned redhead is quite literally the subject matter of one song -- an irony not lost on me.)

The resulting material is evocative, accessible, and often quite pleasant... but ultimately hollow.

Save this one for road trips w/ gal pals.

What if it All Means Something totally surprised me since It's not my style of music at all, but I really loved it. Each and every song was different. I never found myself skipping through songs because they dragged on, on the same level. There was change and interest as the tracks progressed. I had initially gotten the cd because I liked "The Weight of the World". However, I was happy to find the other songs to be just as good or better. Chantal has the ability to sing different types of songs that evoke different moods. My favorite songs were "In This Life," "Time," "What if it All Means Something," and "I'm ready." the whole cd is really good though. Sometimes the lyrics were a bit repetative, but I really didn't mind, because the music was still great. I would recommend this cd to all who want to give it a try because you won't be sorry you did.
