I grew up listening to Chet Atkins. Later, I discovered Kenny Burrell. After that, I discovered Joe Pass.

They all have one thing in common. They all sounded their best when they took center stage with nothing more than their guitar. They all had admirable collaborations with other musicians...some experiments were daring, some what their audiences expected...but nothing matched the sound of one man, one guitar.

Prime example on this album: Sinatra's "I'll Be Around." Beautiful, lyrical, elegant. Just like every other track on this album. Same for "They Can't Take That Away From Me," which has also been covered by Burrell.

Writing a song-by-song review of this album would be pointless, because there isn't a bad or mediocre track on it. From start to finish, it's the sound of a guitar in the hands of a master on some very well-chosen tunes...one of the best hours you will ever spend.

I really enjoyed this album. Joe Pass here plays solo guitar throughout and just SHINES! He is at his most sophisticated blending various melodies with complex harmonies, swinging all the way! If there is one thing that I absolutely love about Joe Pass is his ability to swing while playing solo. There are no drums or hi-hats, but the swing is there in spades! On this album, my favorite song is "They Can't Take That Away From Me" which Joe plays very up-tempo. To hear him swing on that song is truly a treat. I play this album over and over just to get to that song! Ah, but the journey to that song is definitely a yellow brick road.

One man and his guitar = very cool Jazz, but when it's Joe Pass man now we are cookin'.It is very hard to believe that the same man used to inject the devil's dandruff into his veins in his earlier career and still come out on top and play this good after detox.Man I tell you this guy was the real deal I know I've seen him play, he plays chords faster than most guitarists can play single note lead lines(eat your heart out Eddie Van Whatsyourname?)
To any guitarist out there of any genre this album is a must, truly awe inspiring.
