4.0 out of 5 stars See the light!!, November 20, 2008
This review is from: What Is?! (Audio CD)
When I picked this up several months back, it didn't leave my player/head, and still hasn't. It's like James Brown, Iggy Pop and Sun Ra threw a party, invited The Electric Prunes, The Sonics and Os Mutantes & someone definitely spiked the punch!

Now, I know it's lame to just throw out a bunch of references in a review, but with What Is?! you almost have to. Nothing ground-breaking, but that's totally beside the point, for this album is the real deal. It's like soul meets punk meets psychedelia meets free jazz but most importantly REAL rock n roll!!

If you are a fan of one or more of those artists, check this and all of King Khan's stuff out. And if you get a chance to see them live, do so, it's a religeous experience!

This review is from: What Is ?! (MP3 Download)
You will enjoy this album if:

1- you like good music
2- you like to rock out
3- you are tired of 22 year olds telling you which albums are "essential"
4- you did not fall into the hype machine that is TV On The Radio
5- you did not like new wave the first time around
6- you like soul, funk, psych rock, James Brown, Sun Ra, The Stooges all rolled into one

5.0 out of 5 stars King Cool, December 27, 2008
This review is from: What Is?! (Audio CD)
I have to say that I never heard of these guys before seeing King Kahn and BBQ on Halloween in Wicker Park. It was a heckuva show. I try to stay current with my music so I downloaded this CD the very next day--and I'm still listening to it. The full size band and horns make for a pretty unique sound. Yeah, it's derivative but most artists are nowadays. It's the early New York sound mixed with ska and a refined Bowie thrown in. Most of these songs are better than average, and they're thick; meaning that they grow on you with time rather than bore you with time. The best of them has to be "No Regrets" which is one of the kickingest songs ever (a great video version of it can be found on Kahn's MS page). Also, I'm a big fan of "Welfare Bread," "Le Fils," and "How Can I Keep You." King Kahn's the type of guy who keeps you optimistic concerning the new music.
