Book Description

June 30, 2002
A Carnegie Corporation Initiative: Summarizing a Decade of Progress in Early Education

What Kids Need is a compelling case for making the welfare of all our youngest a national priority; it is essential reading for those who work with children and for parents who recognize that the future of their children is profoundly connected to the well-being of all youth in America.

Drawing on a decade of research on children up to the age of ten by top experts, What Kids Need challenges the belief that early risk factors and problems severely constrain a child's life chances. This groundbreaking and encouraging book explores the range of effective parenting techniques and social supports, programs, and policies that really work.

While politicians, parents, and educators across the political spectrum call for improving the lives of American children, What Kids Need lays the groundwork for bringing this goal within our reach. Can we put to use our knowledge-about how children develop, how they acquire the skills and concepts needed for success, and how families, communities, and schools can support their healthy development-so that all American children can thrive?

For over a decade, the Carnegie Foundation has funded research on the needs of children and has been at the forefront of the early education movement. The foundation promotes programs and policies that better the lives of families with young children and seeks to broaden public interest in their future.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Research sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation on the developmental needs of children forms the basis for this collection of reports on initiatives and promising strategies across the nation to support children and their families. The initiatives include efforts by community organizations, foundations, employers, unions, and private nongovernmental organizations to address issues such as health, employment, education, housing, welfare, and justice. Among the programs covered: a Head Start program that caters to migrant families and moves along with the families as they relocate; using videophones to make health assessments of families in rural communities; home visitors who help families with newborns; community-based programs that teach responsible parenting skills to fathers. The book also reports on legislative efforts, including funding universal pre-kindergarten programs. Finally, the book offers an agenda to build on initiatives already in place, noting that there is still much work to be done. Readers interested in public policy on family and child-development issues will find this a helpful and thoughtful resource. Vanessa Bush

Review

'As a mother of three, I am acutely aware of how much a baby learns during the earliest years and how much that affects his or her development. What Kids Need offers parents and policy makers alike insights into the research and discoveries of the past ten years. This book is not only readable; it is encouraging to anyone who cares about America's future: its children.' --Judy Woodruff
