Book Description

An ancient prophecy warns of a girl destined to cause the extinction of the vampire race.

So when 17-year-old Axelia falls into a sacred well filled with blood and emerges a vampire, the immortal empire believes she is this legendary destroyer. Hunted by soldiers and mercenaries, Axelia and her reluctant ally, the vampire bladesmith Lucas, must battle to survive.

How will she convince the empire that she is just an innocent teenager-turned bloodsucker and not a creature of destruction? And if she cannot, can a vampire who is afraid of bugs summon the courage to fight a nation of immortals?

About the Author

Wynne Channing is an award-winning national newspaper reporter and bestselling young adult novelist.
Wynne loves telling stories and as a journalist, she has interviewed everyone from Daniel Radcliffe and Hugh Jackman to the President of the Maldives and Duchess Sarah Ferguson. The closest she has come to interviewing a vampire is sitting down with True Blood's Alexander Skarsgard (he didn't bite).
She briefly considered calling her debut novel "Well" so then everyone would say: "Well written by Wynne Channing."

5.0 out of 5 stars Action with a Touch of Vampire August 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book is a wild ride - quite different than any other young adult vampire tale I've read recently. I enjoyed it so much.

Readers looking for something new and fresh should pick this one up. The vampire elements are light and it doesn't have the heavy teen angst that other titles in this genre usually offer, but it is a step above the rest. A big step above.

I received this ebook as a complimentary review copy from the author for a book tour.

Channing can write action. In fact, nearly the entire book is one action scene after another. I loved it. Her editing is top notch and not once was I taken out of the story by something clunky.

What a great story. I surely hope book two is released soon.

Prediction - Wynne Channing will eventually be offered a deal by one of the big pub houses for her work. It's happened to other self-published, young adult authors. A few of those writers weren't nearly as good as Channing.

5.0 out of 5 stars To Die For June 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Wynne Channing's debut novel, "What Kills Me," is to die for. I'm not being cute here; this vampire novel kicks the you-know-what out of most other vampire novels out there.

The premise is original. The characters are well developed. The settings are beautifully described. The story is fluid and fast-paced. The action is almost non-stop, but never over the top. Most importantly, the series' potential is unlimited.

The main characters, Zee and Lucas, make you want to cheer. They're damaged, yet determined. They're also a great team, whether working in tandem to remove heads and limbs from enemies or supporting each other through a never-ending series of betrayals and heartbreak. Thankfully, Channing depicts how they deal with their burgeoning feelings for each other with style and finesse, instead of overwhelming the reader with endless prose about physical attraction and pseudo-narcissism.

The ending was one of the best I can recall. While bringing the story to a satisfying, albeit surprise, conclusion, the information revealed has the potential to turn the entire series on its ear.

I eagerly--but not very patiently--await the next installment.

I highly recommend "What Kills Me" for fans of YA, paranormal romance, and urban fantasy ... although I firmly believe it should be on the must-read list for anyone who loves great fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Action Packed YA Vampire Thrill Ride! September 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Zee is studying in Rome, trying to broaden her horizons before starting university in the fall. She happens to meet a devastatingly handsome man named Paolo one night while walking home. It turns out that Paolo has a secret - he's a vampire - and intends on killing Zee. Instead, she is transformed into a vampire herself and becomes hunted by the Emperess and her soldiers. With the help of a new ally named Lucas, Zee must find a way to convince the empire that she is not out to destroy their world before a war breaks out.

Although the concept for this novel wasn't exactly unique, the author did a great job separating it from the rest of the genre out there. The story was intriguing and the descriptions and backstory she uses for the empire and its history were imaginative and interesting. The characters, especially our heroine Zee, were likeable and believeable - which immediately made me root for them and their cause. Zee is a flawed character, so she seems easier for the reader to identify with. The flow of the book was great and the writing very well done. The book is full of adventure, romance, and also themes that all readers can understand - finding yourself, courage, fate, and love. With all the action and a fast-paced narrative, this book was a page turner that demanded to be read in one sitting. I highly recommend it for fans of YA vampire and paranormal fiction!

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read! January 25, 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Wynne Channing's novel, What Kills Me, is an amazing page turner from start to finish.
It moves at a quick pace taking the reader on the exciting and tumultuous journey of a teen girl's unexpected new life as a vampire.
Throughout the book, Channing uses great descriptive details to take the reader right to the scene of the action and/or the emotions she's aiming to convey.
What Kills Me was so captivating that I read nearly half of the book the first time I picked it up!
I'm very much looking forward to reading the sequel to What Kills Me this summer and finding out more about Zee's fate and her relationship with Lucas.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, this book! January 21, 2013

This is the first review I've ever written but I thought I would give it a shot...

What attracted me to this book was the great cover art. I'm a sucker for great cover art. That whole, "never judge a book by its cover" thing, yeah I ignore that and totally judge books by their cover and this one is awesome!

I won't go into what the book is about, there are a ton of other reviews that do that but I will tell you why I liked it.

1. Zee-I liked her. At first I thought she was annoying and naive. But she is young and she is a reluctant vampire. But she got better. She got smarter and less whiny. She has also kept her humanity. I think you have to read the book to understand that. She's still a girl but now she kicks ass.

2. Humor-There is quite a bit of humor in this book. Maybe some people would disagree but I thought there were some great lines!

"I just thought vampires would look, you know vicious while drinking blood...you look like you're in kindergarten with your juice pack."

3. Violence-What? I like violence. I wouldn't be reading a vampire book if I didn't. And this one doesn't disappoint! It was awesome. Wynne has a way with description. Even the sounds were described so well I swear I could hear them. Great fight scenes with lots of blood and grossness. So Great!

4. Touch of romance-That's all I say about that. I don't want to give anything away. It was nice though. I like a little romance.

One thing I didn't like about it is that it ends on a cliffhanger. I hate that. And I thought it was too short. I wanted more!
