5.0 out of 5 stars Steve Forbert's Best is as good as it gets!
Steve Forbert is our greatest singer/songwriter and his "Best Of" cd deserves a place in your music collection. "Romeo's Tune" went to #11 on the singles chart, but he's so much more than a "one hit wonder." Early in his career he was labled a "New Dylan" and how could that be anything but praise? No less than Bob Dylan himself...

2.0 out of 5 stars He's got a following
I can appreciate a good singer-songwriter recognized as a musicians musician and I commend Steve Forbert for hanging in there for his fans but I for one am not one of them (with the exception of 2 songs). His lyrics tend to bore me. He's been compared to Dylan (NOT!) and described as a great storyteller. But he doesn't compare to such singer-songwriters as say; John Prine...

5.0 out of 5 stars Steve Forbert's Best is as good as it gets!, November 5, 2001
This review is from: What Kinda Guy - Best of (Audio CD)
Steve Forbert is our greatest singer/songwriter and his "Best Of" cd deserves a place in your music collection. "Romeo's Tune" went to #11 on the singles chart, but he's so much more than a "one hit wonder." Early in his career he was labled a "New Dylan" and how could that be anything but praise? No less than Bob Dylan himself has listed Steve as one of his favorites. There are 19 tracks here, some unavailable elsewhere on cd, and every one is a winner. "It is't Gonna Be That Way" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. In "Get Well Soon" he sounds so excited he can barely get the words out, which makes for a great performace. Fans of intelligent music with well-written lyrics will be thrilled with this compact disc. Also music fans will enjoy his sense of humour. Do yourself a favor and order this one today. Then pick up the rest! You'll be back for more!

5.0 out of 5 stars They don't know what they're missing, June 8, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: What Kinda Guy - Best of (Audio CD)
This is the first review I've ever done, but I'm always so sorry more people haven't heard of Steve Forbert. This might be my favorite album. Seems like I never tire of it. Song for Katrina is one of my favorites (and you can listen to a portion of it here). Its one of the mellower tunes, so don't be diswayed if its too 'nice'.

I know he's been compared to Dylan, but I'd go more in the Wallflowers direction. He's been around for quite awhile now, but he seems to be able to cross generations and gender - my mother and daughter think he's great as do husbands and boyfriends.

I'm not a music critic, but know what I like. I first saw Steve Forbert at a free concert at John Carroll University in Cleveland sponsored by a radio station that doesn't even exist anymore (M-105). Alot of years passed since 1978 and quite frankly I had forgotten about Steve. This cd made me feel like a carefree teen again. If you like folksy rock - a definate must.

5.0 out of 5 stars What Fun!, February 16, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: What Kinda Guy - Best of (Audio CD)
I'm one of those middle aged rock fans that was raised on the radio. Of Steve Forbert's works, "Romeo's Tune" is pretty much all I was familiar with. Boy what I have been missing. This album is full of songs that really represent why I like rock music. It is nothing but fun. You can tell how much fun he has playing and singing, even when his words are sharp. This is a good mix of hard rockers and soft folky numbers, complete with live cuts. An entirely enjoyable CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great compilation of Forbert's best while with Nemperor, July 14, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: What Kinda Guy - Best of (Audio CD)
Steve Forbert's music is hard to categorize but great to listen to! John Hiatt, Bruce Cockburn, Buddy Holly, and John Gorka are names that come to mind while listening to these songs. This CD is a compilation of some of his best work while he was with Nemperor Records. In the late 70's through the mid-80's he was the hottest ticket in town with songs like "You Cannot Win, (if you do not play)", "Romeo's Tune", "Going Down To Laurel", and "The Sweet Love That You Give, (sure goes a long, long way)". The music runs the gamut from beautifully crafted love songs to all out, foot stompin' rockers. Some feature Steve, his acoustic guitar and little else while others involve a full blown horn section and cooking electric guitars. This is an album of great songs by an underappreciated artist of the 70's and 80's.

Steve Forbert deserves much, much more than he gets and I can't understand why he isn't more popular than he is. He can write like Dylan or Springsteen and he can play with the best of em also. Do yourself a favor and give this disc a spin - you won't be sorry!...

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Romeo's tune, November 18, 1998

This review is from: What Kinda Guy - Best of (Audio CD)
My first disc from Steve Forbet. Actually, purchased it for Romeo's tune but after a few listen, its the other lesser known tracks that catch me listening to it over and over again. The recording is very good and the price too. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Steve Forbert...the 'cure' for the nonsense 1990's, November 18, 1998
By
mikewill@erinet.com (North Hampton, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: What Kinda Guy - Best of (Audio CD)
Touted as the 'next Dylan' at the advent of his career in the late '70's (note: I possess none of Mr. Dylan's recordings...), Steve Forbert is merely a god-send for those of us who have found themselves in the lyrical/melodic vacuum that is the 1990's. Whether it is his precious early works from Jackrabbit Slim, Alive on Arrival or Little Stevie Orbit, or his latest works from Streets of This Town, The American in Me, The Mission of the Crossroad Palms and Rocking Horse Head, you're throwing your hard-earned money out of the proverbial music-buying window by not experiencing this man's music! Indeed, if you're diving into life, (with all of the wonders & heartaches that it is comprised of) as I am, and you find yourself missing an (extremely rare combination) of cerebral, straight-from-the-heart,and head, blend of music that is far, too seldom experienced, then you absolutely must give a listen to the most adult/parent/lover/worker/life-experiencing music available today. How is it you have never heard of Steve's music prior to this (unpaid) testimonial? I'll be glad to leave you pondering this inevitable question once you've had a listen...I've converted many visitors who've had the distinct opportunity to visit the friendly, fire-place-ridden confines of my living room with Steve's coolness filling the 'clear blue autumn days' of my world, and have subsequently added additional memory to my computer, anxiously anticipating the many 'thank-you's' that will surely come as a result of your lending an ear...1st purchase suggestion: The American in Me @ amazon.com, Alive on Arrival and The Mission of the Crossroad Palms...after which, the remaining CD purchases will only be a matter of time. Don't forget to forward all accolades/thank you's...after all, as a fellow 'struggling with the shallowness of the 90's' kind of guy, it's the least I can do! Enjoy...M.

I was wondering what ever happened to Steve Forbert, then I heard Dylan's new "Workingman's Blues" and I asked myself, where did I hear that tune before? Pretty soon I found myself humming "Romeo's Tune." I lost my vinyl of Jackrabbit Slim a long time ago, so I was looking for a collection that would include the best of that album and others that he did. Hailed as the next Bob Dylan in his day, Steve Forbert seemed to be forgotten somewhere along the way, but Romeo's Tune still gets airtime. However, this guy had so much more to offer. In addition to the studio releases, this collection offers live versions of "Complications," "Thinkin" and "Schoolgirl," as well as something I had never heard before, "Samson and Delilah's Beauty Shop." Great stuff!
