Book Description

Ashlyn Macnamara weaves a delicious tale of two souls torn apart by circumstance and reunited by fate—perfect for fans of Julia Quinn, Eloisa James, and Sabrina Jeffries.

Henrietta Upperton is about to marry Alexander Sanford when he rushes off to India to salvage his family’s fortune. Then comes the devastating news that he has wed another. Eight agonizing years later, a storm washes Alexander ashore—injured, widowed, and hunted—and one glimpse of his ruggedly handsome face reawakens the desire Henrietta thought she had buried deep inside. Her body still yearns for his touch, but she’s determined not let him wound her again . . . not this time.

For Alexander, honor always comes first. But only now does he realize that when given the choice between two virtuous deeds, he picked the wrong one. On the run with his life in tatters and a pair of daughters in tow, Alexander burns for Henrietta. He knows he does not deserve forgiveness. And yet he longs to wrap his arms around her warm body once again. What’s more, he is sure the lady craves the same.

2.0 out of 5 stars Really wanted to like this one August 13, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
When I saw this touted as perfect for Julia Quinn fans I had to check it out. Sadly it in no way measured up. Despite knowing there had to be some reason why Alexander jilted Henrietta his behavior throughout the story did nothing to make him more likeable. He came across as whiny and self-pitying to me throughout most of the story. Then he's constantly trying to seduce Henrietta and even at one point being upset that she refused him and thought badly of him despite him giving half-assed explanations. What a jerk! You really think she should be satisfied with what you told her even though it was no real explanation? Then there was his abhorrent behavior towards his daughter, Helena. There were many indications as to the reason for his behavior and I guessed the true reason early on. Still if anything that made his behavior that much worse. One would think he would make more of an effort in Helena's case. Then when Henrietta points out how he obviously favors his younger daughter he continues to behave in the same way and make stupid excuses for his behavior. At one point even claiming ignorance about not seeing Helena. I swear I wanted to strangle him or shoot him myself.

The nail in his coffin was his behavior towards his sister when his daughters are kidnapped. As a parent I can understand his distraught but to treat his sister who had no clue what was going on and who was injured herself in such a way is unforgivable. Then he lashes out at Henrietta claiming she wouldn't know what it's like as she isn't a parent. Ummmm, from all I saw she was more of a parent than Alexander ever was.

Honestly, I only kept reading thinking at some point Alexander would redeem himself but he never did. So sadly despite loving Henrietta and finding Alexander's aunt amusing they weren't enough to save the story.

3.0 out of 5 stars I so wanted to like this book January 18, 2015

I so wanted to like this book. Unfortunately, the character I most liked was the great aunt. The heroine was a strong woman but, I wished that she had went on with her life after the broken engagement. I think I would have liked her even more if she had. I really did not like the hero Alex. Not much of a hero if he betrayed his only love. If his friend loved Maryanne so much then he would have understood that Alex could have not forsaken his love for Henrietta and married Maryanne upon his death. The hero betrayed and shattered his own love of the heroine for his so called honor. Alex could have helped Maryanne with emotional support, monetary and helped with the child without marrying her. They were in India after all. Not in Maryanne's own country. She could have just told everyone that she was a widow with a child whose father had died. Better than the child thinking her real father was Alex. Very unbelievable that Alex only made love to his wife Maryanne one time during the years of his marriage. Also one of his ships was named after his wife. Sorry, I do not recommend reading this book. However, I do recommend the next book with Alex sister's story. I read the second book before the first. The second book was a very enjoyable read. I guess if I had read the first one first my review would have been different. The second book had so much more depth to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful read! August 12, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"What a Lady Craves” is Ashlyn Macnamara’s third book, and first in her Eton Boys trilogy. This book managed to hit all my favorite romance tropes: mystery, governesses, lovers reunited, and gender confused cats. Ok, so the cat isn’t really gender confused, the cat’s owner is the one confused about its gender.

Henrietta Upperton, sister of George Upperton (hero of Macnamara’s last book) is a paid companion to the Dowager Countess of Epperley. Henrietta is the jilted fiancée of the countess’ great-grandnephew Alexander, who left for India eight years earlier to save his family fortune. As our story begins, Alexander’s ship ends up wrecked off the coast, not far from where our heroine and his great-grandaunt live.

What sets this book apart from similar novels is the characterizations. I’m reminded of early Julie Garwood novels, back when Garwood wrote complex characters that were always more than your first impression. I also ended up liking Henrietta more than Alexander, who I wanted to slap for most of the book, although his reasons for leaving and jilting Henrietta are explained adequately. Alexander’s sense of honor is a force to be reckoned with, as it is what drives his actions for most of the book. If you could mate Mr. Rochester with Mr. Darcy, Alexander is who you’d end up with.

Henrietta is a strong, sensible heroine who tries to pattern herself after Mary Wollstonecraft. At times, I thought Henrietta might be the only sensible person in the story. She does have faults, such as a foul mouth (well, as foul mouthed as a woman of good breeding in the time period can be, I suppose). She can get flustered easily, such as when she gets cornered in dark, empty corridors by Alexander.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved It! August 12, 2014

Format:Kindle Edition
Henrietta was jilted by her fiancé and is now the paid companion of the Dowager Countess of Epperley. Alexander the man who jilted Henrietta years ago to run off to India to replenish the family fortune ends up shipped wrecked not far from where Henrietta is living. This is an excellent read, the characters are funny and interesting, the story is fast paced and action packed and the sex between Henrietta and Alexander is hot and steamy. I enjoyed the story and the antics of the entire cast of characters. Excellent Read!

More About the Author

They say that once you reach your forties, you undergo some sort of mid-life crisis. That must have been what happened to Ashlyn Macnamara when she finally made up her mind to set down some of the stories that had been accumulating dust in the dark recesses of her brain for years. As space becomes available, other plots and characters have developed the pesky habit of moving in to take their place.

Ashlyn lives in the wilds of suburbia outside Montreal with her husband and two teenaged daughters. When not writing, she looks for other excuses to neglect the housework, among them knitting, reading and wasting time on the internet in the guise of doing research.
