Book Description

"Ten years is a long time and even though I love you, I don’t think this is best for us anymore." Those are the words that fall from Liam Barnes' lips and leave Harper Reed's heart in ruins on the side of Interstate 5. He's lost and he thinks leaving her and all of Oregon in his rear-view is what he needs to find himself, dragging her heart right along with him as he goes.

Blindsided and devastated by the loss, Harper's life crumbles around her, but she's not the only one rocked by the news of Liam's departure. Austin Hayward, Liam's best friend and her long-time admirer, handles it about as well as Harper—not well at all. He is the only other person who understands the abandonment and helplessness she feels, and she finds comfort in their common sorrow and, unexpectedly, in his arms.

It's where Austin has always wanted her and where neither of them predicted she would end up. But is it where she'll stay? Is a new spark enough, when compared to an old flame, like the one Austin can see still flickering in her eyes?

Toward the end of a downward spiral lie the answers. What You Leave Behind is a story of anxious hearts, the deceitful self, and what it means to be lost and found again.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent read December 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This book isn't really written in a way that's typical of the genre. Some sections are heartbreaking, others absolutely hilarious, and at times the text is so flowy it's almost dream-like. It really taps into the uncertainty and insecurity experienced by almost anyone who has ever been in love (or confused about whether or not they really are), and doesn't let up. Very honest look at loss of love, and the messy yet sincere ways we sometimes try to put ourselves back together again. I'd recommend this book to anyone that likes a good, angsty, yet often romantic and emotionally-fueled read. Seriously. Go read it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Angsty love triangle January 3, 2014
By TeriLyn
Format:Kindle Edition
I finished this book last night and have been sitting on my thoughts since. This is a hard book for me to review. I usually don't like love triangles so I try to avoid reading a book based on a love triangle all together. The synopsis of What You Leave Behind wasn't completely indicative of this being a love triangle. Often, I find myself rating books on the feeling I get when I read them more so than the plot, writing, themes, etc. This is especially true if something in the book I've experienced or can envision myself experiencing. With that said, I have nothing in common with Harper, the heroine. Except that we both have in common a deceased parent who died of cancer. Harper is lost in love, drowning it it. The love of her life that spanned a decade leaves her and the hollow that is left is lost. She finds comfort in his best friend. I found Harper a bit naive. She's 26 and it felt like I should be reading about am 18/19 year old girl. What You Leave Behind is about the after math of her great love leaving her and what happens when he returns. It's about finding friendship in unlikely places. It's about finding yourself in the rubble that's been left. I really did like the story. The writing is descriptive and forthcoming. The story is engaging to the point that I wanted to know what happens and who she would choose. It provoked feeling in me even though it wasn't all positive. For that, it's worth reading. I just didn't love it. I found myself having a hard time connecting with Harper. She is so confused and back & forth that I found nothing relatable. The story is angsty, which I don't mind. But the main character herself is a constant state of angst, which I did mind. That's where experience comes into play. Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing! December 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Beautiful and heart breaking and brilliant in every single way. I'll admit, I'm a very picky reader, and if a story doesn't grab me within the first few pages - if I even get that far - the chances of me finishing it are slim to none. This captivating story had me from the very first word of the prologue up until the very last word of the epilogue. I laughed, I cried, and I felt everything right along with the characters whose story it was I was not just reading, but experiencing. I look forward to more of Jessica's work, and hope there isn't too long of a wait before I'm reading the next story she's penned. I definitely recommend this story to everyone, really. And if I could give more than 5 stars, I would.

5.0 out of 5 stars So in love with What You Leave Behind. December 28, 2013
By Janet
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book had me from the beginning. I hated Liam and was all for Aussie and Harper to get their HEA. I knew my emotions were in for a ride when they said their "I love yous" at around 65% of the book, and boy was I right. This book had me sitting on my couch and ignoring my family so I could see what would happen next (for the record, my family survived). The Epilogue damn near killed me......the tears just wouldn't stop. Seriously amazing story and I can't wait to read more by Jessica Katoff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartbreak, Healing and Help along the way December 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I completely devoured this book. I tore through it in about a day and its usually difficult for me to finish reading books these days.

I feel for every character in this book and that means its a great book to me. If you are into chick-lit with a little bit of angst and heartbreak, this book is right up your alley. If you like a book to tug at your heart strings and wish for everyone to heal right, this book is for you.

Jessica Katoff writes with such ease that every word is important to the story. I highly recommend this book! Can't wait for the next Jessica Katoff book!

2.0 out of 5 stars Just okay - SPOILERS April 8, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The character of Liam is underdeveloped to the point that the ending of the book makes no sense. Who is this guy and why does Harper love him? We really know nothing about him except that he is a hot mess. Much more time was spent on Austin, so, as a reader, i knew and liked him. Puzzling.

It's pretty well written, but could use a good editor for the grammatical errors.

More About the Author

Jessica Katoff is a boring CEO by day and a New Adult/Chick Lit/Whatever-You-Want-to-Call-It author by night. When she isn't pretending to be a professional or staring hopelessly at the blinking cursor on her laptop screen, Jessica loves to marvel at the beauty of live music, not wear pants, bake tasty things, binge watch television shows, drink whiskey, and sleep--not all at once. Jessica hates ignorance, people who talk during movies or with their mouth full, lima beans, and the word "ooze." A southern Florida native and current resident, she plans on relocating to Tennessee with her two very fluffy pooches as soon as possible, and is currently accepting applications for a devastatingly perfect husband in the greater Nashville area. She expects to release her second novel, Some of the Parts, in 2014.
