Book Description

This is a story about struggle, a story of hope, and mostly, a story about love. A journey with a unique young girl who is so sure of what is out there waiting for her, that she never compromises her belief in finding it.
It isn't always an easy path, but Jane Rawley Solomon's humor, character, and passion for others, keep her moving towards her goals - despite life throwing obstacles in her way. What she's left with is truly beautiful.

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

I started writing this novel in 2009, after losing my remarkable dog, Rawley, to a bone tumor in a very emotional process. As the next year continued, my other canine companion of twelve years, Max, passed away from liver cancer. In that same period, a very dear coaching colleague - far too young to deal with her medical issues - passed away from cancer. Not to be a bearer of grief, as we all deal with these events in our lives, but from 2008-2012, I watched as my father battled pancreatic cancer, fighting with amazing resolve.
Amidst so much loss and pain, it was easy to write the sad parts of this book. The trick was keeping the hope, the love, the fight, and the joy - that they all managed to hold onto - represented in my heroine, Jane.
Despite numerous challenges, I knew I wanted to push through and finish this work when a former teammate from college lost her struggle with cancer earlier this winter. This book's dedication is for those people who struggle with illness and pain, and yet never lose their optimism or their love for others. I hope I do them - and through them, all of you - justice.

Best wishes.

From the Back Cover

Though some lives are grand, and some small, all of them have an impact.
Fifty percent of the author's profits from the book sales of 'What We Leave Behind', will be split, and donated to the Ronald McDonald House charities ( and the ASPCA ( In the names of my father - Will, Shelly and Lauren.
The reason I'm choosing these two charities are manifold, but knowing the individuals as I did, and understanding the benefits these charities provide for those in need, it makes perfect sense.
Anyone who appreciates the healing power of animals, will understand the ASPCA . And if the circumstances happen when long term care of a loved one is necessary - then you understand the financial burden incurred by traveling during these times. The support of family and friends becomes immeasurable during difficult times - and these amazing charities represent the ideals of the individuals this book is hoping to honor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read June 16, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This is the first book by Matthew Alan I have read, but it will not be the last! I sat down Friday evening and by Sat afternoon it was finished! I am not an overly emotional person but this book made me "sloppy cry", but not in an overly sad way. The character development was so fantastic in this book that it is nearly impossible not to fall in love with Jane and Max. Jane taught Max about seizing the moment and living every day as if it might be your last, and when it is our last, what do we want to leave behind? What impact do we want to leave on those we love, those who have hurt us whom we have learned to forgive and how, through death can those that we leave behind cherish our memory and use that to move forward and live again.
Jane had a not so pleasant upbringing and was adopted at an older than normal age, she was adopted by a wonderful family who you absolutely fall in love with however she was forced to deal head on with racial differences and all the adversity that goes along with that throughout her life. The main theme throughout this entire book was love, love of a family, love of a best friend, love of a man and how when we leave this earth that love remains though we are no longer here. Fabulous Mr. Alan! I will be checking out your other works!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is for everyone... June 2, 2014

Alan understands that life must be about living with love and dying with strength, dignity, and hope. For the short time we are here we are often faced with burdens heavier than we can shoulder and pain greater than we can imagine. Alan opens a window into lives touched by the realization that we all move on...its how we do it that matters. Get this book. Although I read it in an afternoon, straight through, what I'm still wrestling with is how I will allow What We Leave Behind to change my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read August 3, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
An amazingly tough topic everyone of us has to face in some way (and hopefully in a less tragic way); but a topic dealt with grace, gut and poignant realism. When you want to discover more about the characters and it becomes increasingly hard to swallow, you know you are on a great book. Not sure what it reveals of me, but reading this book part of me learnt something about love and relationship. Thank you Matt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well done, Matthew. May 15, 2014

I bought the book for a weekend trip with friends, and couldn't get my nose out of it, stealing a peek every chance I could get, to find out what happens next. A fine descriptive story about pure goodness and pure evil, and the power to forgive those who hurt us most. Make the most of what you're given...think about what you want to leave behind.

This has to be one of the most heartfelt and beautiful stories that I've read in a love time.

This isn't a story about hot, passionate, steamy love. This is a story about true love. Both between parents and their child as well as between a man a woman. This is a story about how powerful that pure, unconditional love truly is.

Jane was adopted at the age of 10 by Willa and Jason. Their connection was immediate and the difference in the color of their skin was never an issue to them. That wasn't the case with everyone, however, as Jane had to deal with looks and whispers all the time.

This book is Jane's story. It goes back and forth between the present, when she's an adult, and the past so we can learn about her as a child, teen, and young adult. She is truly an amazing woman who is not only totally selfless, caring, and all around just a GOOD person.

She meets and later marries Max. Their love is as pure and real as her parents love. Unconditional.

A visit to the doctor changes their whole lives and none of them will ever be the same again.

I am so honored to have been given a copy of this book. Jane is truly an inspiration as is Matthew Alan for being able to write such a heartfelt story.

I give this one 5 stars and will definitely look forward to reading more from this author!

4.0 out of 5 stars Uplifting August 30, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A tender and satisfying story of a remarkable, open-hearted woman who combines a talent for love, compassion and joy with the fierce determination of an outstanding athlete. Most all portraits in the book are well-rounded character studies, both those you would love to know and those lacking in sympathy and the milk of human kindness. It is a bit simplistic, more to keep the story moving along--and it is a simple story, somewhat like Love Story--than because the author is afraid of nuance. The thrust is in the expanding strength and understanding of Jane, the hero, as she grows from an orphan at ten to full maturity. If you are looking for tears and smiles, you will like meeting Jane, her adoptive parents, her friends, enemies, and the men in her life.

More About the Author

Matthew Alan grew up in Canton, Ohio. After graduating from Kenyon College, and earning a Master's degree from Western Illinois, he began a career in teaching and coaching. He is an avid swimmer, dog enthusiast, and reader.

From Matthew - I write books about struggling through life, because that's my experience. But even at the toughest moments, there has been humor.
Because when you're talking with friends after a breakup, you joke to make it real. And after a funeral celebrating a lost loved one, you're with family, telling the best stuff, the funny stuff.

That's life. That's what I write. Why I write. The juxtaposition of sad and happy, joyful and tragic. Nothing is more real than that.

Hope it makes sense.

Thanks for reading!

Matthew currently lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
