Editorial Reviews

Review

"Here's a first novel I highly recommend. This is honest, powerful writing at its best, targeted especially at any woman who has ever wondered what might have been." -James Grippando, NY Times bestselling author

"Compelling...the story's twists and turns generate real tension, and Weinstein renders Jessica's feelings with enough complexity that her ultimate decision carries emotional weight...[Weinstein] tells  a good love story." -Kirkus Review

"Each word of What We Leave Behind invokes raw emotion as we are brought deeper into the soul of a woman that can be any of us.  This moving story will echo strongly with any woman has had to face love and loss, life and death, and everything in between." Wendy Stone, Long Island Woman

I read many reviews before I read this book. I noticed that none of the reviews I read gave a synopsis of the story. I usually pick a book based on reviews that give at least some inkling as to what the story is about.... After finishing this book I understand why that is. It's difficult to tell you what I didn't like without a spoiler alert. So here I go with a ***SPOILER ALERT*** Jessica is a girl who's dad dies when she is only 4. She meets this boy at a time in his life when his father is dying. She has a special connection with the boys father and the boy ( Jonas) becomes her first love.
For certain reasons Jonas leaves her and never looks back, or so it seems to Jessica. She moves on with her life and eventual finds love with Marty. They have a wonderful live together until tragedy strikes. Just as their marriage is feeling the stress of this tragedy Jonas comes back into her life along with a very complicated issue.
Ultimately she is choosing between what might have been and what is.
In the beginning of this book i really thought I was going to like it. The author really held my attention. The way she described the intensity of your first real true love took me right back to that time in my own life. When Jessica moved on into adulthood and met and married her husband I was still on board. But what took place after that really annoyed me.
When Jessica meets up with Jonas again it is through tragic circumstances. They have to make choices together and that alone brings them closer.
I can believe that Jessica was pinning for Jonas for years and can't resist being with him or even thinking about being with him. But almost every thought she has about her husband after reconnecting with Jonas is negative. This is a man who has been nothing but good to her!!

At 4:30am after reading right through the acknowledgements, I finally closed What We Leave Behind What We Leave Behind. To say this book satisfied my heart and soul would be an understatement. It's very rare that a book grabs my attention in such a way that every time I would attempt to put it down, I would tell myself, "just one more chapter!" But, Rochelle Weinstein did it; telling a poignant story of what was, what is, and what could have been. Not just for Jessica Parker... but in many ways for all of us. This is a must read. You won't be able to put it down either!

I, on the other hand, was able to put it down.
I got a fourth of the way through it before finding myself bored silly by a recollection of an adolescent crush. I found the characters very unbelievable. I found it difficult to believe that a fifteen-year-old stranger with a crush on a twenty-two-year-old Harvard medical student would be so happily absorbed into the bosom of the family of a terminally ill man into which she had pointlessly inserted herself. I found it not romantic, but infuriating, that the twenty-two-year-old guy has both families' acceptance and encouragement in pursuing a romantic relationship with a tenth-grader. (If she had been my daughter he would have been in jail.) The protagonist's level of introspection, although explained as a consequence of her above average intelligence, is simply not credible. It is not intelligence alone which gives us introspection, but a degree of life experience that is simply not possible to accrue at fifteen years old. We are supposed to accept that the death of the protagonist's father, which occurred when she was little more than a toddler, has conferred this great wisdom upon her. The crush, itself, does not ring true-to-life. It reads like the fantasies I cultivated over youngish celebrities when I was fifteen, not like any real-life saga. I mean, how many twenty-two-year-olds are so well connected to the captain of a yacht as to arrange a private daytrip to Catalina, with the accompanying elegantly served private luncheon at a charming but unknown bed and breakfast? (Again, we are assured that this girl's mother has given her blessing to this arrangement.) Last, but not least, there were so many anachronisms that I was not sure just what decade the story was set in. Sorry, but there is simply too much good fiction out there to waste anymore time on this one.

My friend once told me that the power of a book is when people recognize themselves in its pages. As I read What We Leave Behind, I found myself going back in my own memories and remembering my feelings about my first love. It is obvious that Ms. Weinstein understands the true nature of love at its deepest core. This book was gripping from the start and kept me captivated throughout. What We Leave Behind is a must read!

I was surprised and disappointed after buying this book based on the positive reviews. It might have been written by a college freshman. The language is unsophisticated, melodramatic, sometimes nonsensical. The story is implausible and the characters poorly developed. It's like a bad soap opera. Maybe fun for a teenager?

From the minute I started reading, I couldn't put it down. I felt so connected to the characters and loved the way the story flowed. It wasn't your typical and predictable love story. I can't stop telling my friends about it and can't wait for someone to read it so I can talk about it with them! I would love to see it as a movie!!
