5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid Reference Work from the Reformer
This one-volume reference used to be in three, smaller volumes. So yes, the size of this text, at times, can be unwieldy, but what a trove of quotations! Luther was a master of theology and Plass's selections show a broad range of the subjects he wrote about and preached on. This volume is definitely worth the investment for anyone who may need an applicable...

3.0 out of 5 stars Missing a little Something Important
I am very satisfied with the new publication of this book. One volume in most cases is better than three. The inside looks the same as the three volume set, the paper thickness is just different. It is more like Bible paper.

The one reason I rate it a three is due to the cross-references. The book was originally published in 1959 - before Luther's American...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Tool, May 13, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: What Luther Says (Hardcover)
This anthology of Martin Luther's writings, sermons, and teachings is an excellent tool for any Christian to use as a devotional guide or a reference book. It provides easy access to the thoughts, beliefs, and ideas of Luther in a user-friendly format, and is not overly cumbersome. It deserves a prominent spon in every Christian's library

What a buy this is! Five stars and counting, I say. This is a great anthology. Buyer, you cannot go wrong. The binding is excellent, so too the paper and the print. This print is 9.5.

If you want a treasure chest of great ideas on God and theology and the Bible is general from one who saturated himself with the Word, this is it.

I am very satisfied with the new publication of this book. One volume in most cases is better than three. The inside looks the same as the three volume set, the paper thickness is just different. It is more like Bible paper.

The one reason I rate it a three is due to the cross-references. The book was originally published in 1959 - before Luther's American Works were all published. What I would like to see is a volume of this importance with the cross references of Luther's American Works and possibly the other extensive Works of Martin Luther (The Philadelphia Edition). From a scholarly stand point, this would make it a great tool to cross reference to the LW and come out with a larger scope of the treatise, letter, or lecture that Luther was giving - that is without having to learn German (The references in this volume are of the Weimar, Erlangen, and the revised Halle or Walch edition.)

Hope this helps. All in all it is a great volume worth the price for sure. I could not imagine a tougher volume to compile - and a volume to be more appreciative of than this one.

Excellent, simply excellent, if one wishes to capture a glimpse and indeed more, if you seek to advise anyone in pastoral way buy this book, Luther was a man who took all problems to the word, wrestled in the word with the problems and then brought the answer out of the word, you may not alas agree with him, but alas he WILL make you think!

I have been encouraged by the growth of Biblical theology as a guide for Church practice, Christian theology and indeed Christian living. If you want to listen into a man who made biblical theology as practical as making a cup of tea, then read Luther. He has a profound grasp of God's word and a great understanding of its eternal relevance.

This review is from: What Luther Says (Hardcover)
If you are like many Christians I know, then you have been bombarded with all sorts of criticisms against Luther and his writings. This compilation of his teachings, however, demonstrates to a modern reader why Luther is known as "the Great Reformer," and gives a more balanced and exhaustive look at what he really believed. His writings are especially needed today when so many professing Evangelicals are finding their way back to Rome! As Luther predicted in his own day: "The situation is destined to become worse later on, so that the entire world will oppose the Gospel, cast reflections on this Word, and condemn it." We see this happening even now with the progress of the Ecumenical Movement and the march toward world unity, inspired by the Pope. The Gospel is continually compromised so that the world religions can find "peace" together. But as Luther said: "You papists will never accomplish what you intend, do what you will. To this Gospel, which I, Martin Luther, have preached, pope, bishops, monks, kings, princes, devil, death, sin and everything that is not Christ and in Christ shall give way. They shall be subdued by this Gospel. Nothing can help them escape." Luther, of course, looked forward to the Lord's return when He will judge the world and "destroy with everlasting destruction" those who do not obey the Gospel of Jesus Christ (2 Thessalonians 1:8-9).

This book is awesome! A wealth of information of Luther's sermons and thoughts all combined into one book. It's listed under subject heading too, so that makes it easy to find stuff. Highly recommended!
