Book Description

December 1, 1994 10 and up
What makes a Rembrandt a Rembrandt? Or a van Gogh a van Gogh? This series explains what makes one artist's work different from any other's. Recognizing and appreciating the work of a particular artist can be as easy as spotting a friend's handwriting. This title covers the life and work of Francisco Goya and gives clues to identifying his work through the colour, line, shape, composition, brushwork and subject matter used. The author also describes Goya's career and the times in which he lived.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 5-9--Writing with clarity and confidence, Muhlberger reveals the individual ``handwriting'' of these artists by analyzing a dozen or so of their major works, pointing out their use of light and shadow, repetition of shapes, choices of medium, and other techniques that define their styles. Many of the paintings, which are splendidly reproduced in full color, are from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection, but there are generous borrowings from private sources and other museums, making the books truly representative of each artist's career. A few biographical details are mentioned, but the author does not concern himself, or young readers, with the scandals, tragedies, and controversies that are part of the subjects' personal histories. Produced on heavy, glossy paper and designed with a variety of visual effects, these titles are delightfully informative and fine supplements to detailed biographies.
