Book Description

Conversation Series October 3, 2006
Introducing an Important New Series of Original Audiobooks:

The ideas expressed in Emotional Intelligence ten years ago have taken on a life of their own. They spurred a movement, with enthusiastic adherents in the business world, in medicine and healthcare, at home, in the field of education and the world at large. Several million people, including business managers, human resource departments, healthcare workers, teachers, parents and students, have applied the ideas and principles expressed in Emotional Intelligence to their fields with tangible and quantifiable results. Leading with Emotional Intelligence Conversations is an ongoing dialogue series that begins with luminaries in the field of business. In the world of business we have only scratched the surface of how principles of emotional intelligence can increase profitability and efficiency in the workplace.
No one knows leadership like Jack Welch. Along with his bestselling co-author and wife, Suzy Welch, he explores with Daniel Goleman what it means to be a great leader, and what essential elements must be present in order for any leadership to be successful. Key elements of emotional intelligence, from self-awareness to the ability to instill core values in a team, are part of that success. Discovering how to nurture emotional intelligence, beginning as early as childhood, plays a crucial role in the ultimate success of any leader.

Now, in What Makes A Leader?, listeners can learn from the best how to create the environment that helps leadership thrive.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This brief drive-time motivational audio features three great business minds: former CEO of General Electric Jack Welch; his wife and former editor of the Harvard Business Review, Suzy Welch; and Emotional Intelligence author Goleman. Unfortunately, the whole is less than the sum of its parts. The hourlong format barely gives the three time to cover the basics, let alone do justice to complex issues surrounding leadership, self-confidence and cultivating a team spirit in the workplace. There is also too much of Goleman—the ostensible interviewer—and not enough of the Welches, who don't speak a word until the third track. Jack Welch makes some intriguing points about hiring strategies and the promotion of key people, but his gravelly voice is not a natural for audio, with the volume flitting in and out as his enthusiasm waxes and wanes. Suzy Welch, in contrast, shines brightly; her voice is passionate, engaging and consistent throughout, and her illustrations are always helpful. What distinguishes this audio from the leadership books all three authors have written is the kind of excitement that Suzy Welch's ideas and presentation generate. (Oct.)

1.0 out of 5 stars Waffle & Balderdash, September 25, 2009
This review is from: What Makes a Leader?: A Leading With Emotional Intelligence Conversation with Jack and Suzy Welch (Conversation Series) (Audio CD)
Only two words can best describe this material: Waffle and balderdash. This is putting it mildly. It so bad I just can't find the words for it. These greedy "humans" are simply cashing in on the trendy topic of emotional intelligence (EQ).

Two supposedly well-known American leadership "experts" discuss emotional intelligence as being an essential component to leadership. Their prime criterion for measurement is the accumulation of wealth in excess beyond need, as reflected in the success of "leaders" in big successful companies. Basically saying that those who are not successful at getting rich are basically emotionally unsuccessful. Good heavens, why can't anyone recognise that without charity and goodwill the human race would have been destitute and the planet doomed long before now? Are charity and goodwill signs of emotional "unintelligence"? Giving away millions of dollars, sterling, or whatever, after hording it is not necessarily being emotionally intelligent; it is trying to appease one's conscience and making oneself feel good.

I will be feeling very guilty selling this CD onto someone else. Best look elsewhere for better material. Goleman has tarnished his reputation by consorting with the "devil and his greed".
