4.0 out of 5 stars ENCOURAGES CHILDREN TO BE INQUISITIVE & TO LISTEN & LEARN
WHAT MAKES A RAINBOW? is a winner because it's clever, well-made, colorful, educational, beautifully illustrated and sturdy. (No, a child can't rip out the ribbons; however, don't give them any scissors! Ha.) Little Rabbit asks his mother, "What makes a rainbow?" and she tells him to ask his friends. He proceeds to ask: Ladybug/Red, Mr. Fox/Orange, Little Chick/Yellow,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book except there are not 6 colors in a rainbow!
I would agree with everyone that the story and illustrations are wonderful. Both my 2 year old and 5 year old son also love the ribbons of color that run through the book. They also like the pop-up rainbow at the end of the book, and this has had to be taped back a few times as it's much too delicate for forceful little hands. I am only giving this book 3 stars though,...

Fox/Orange, Little Chick/Yellow, Mr. Grasshopper/Green, Bluebird/Blue, and Butterfly/Purple. (Where are the MRS.? Hmm.) Every page is predominantly one color and with each turn of the page, a shiny ribbon appears, each under the previous--an inventive idea! Love it.

At the end, Little Rabbit's mother reappears and says, "Now you know what makes a rainbow: RAIN, COLORS--red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and SUNSHINE!" I like the way she suggested he ask others; this shows parents that sometimes it is best to allow your child to answer his/her *own* questions instead of telling them the answers--Stimulate their Imagination and Inquisitiveness! We can learn SO MUCH from others. I love the way this concept shines throughout the story. Great job all around Schwarz, Turner and Gondek--now THIS is Teamwork!

My daughter picked this out at [local store] among many wonderful books. She wouldn't let it go, she just HAD to have it. She has only done this twice; once with a stuffed kitty and the other--this book! WHAT MAKES A RAINBOW? would make a great gift! 8/10 stars....

5.0 out of 5 stars What Makes a Rainbow?, April 10, 2000
This is an excellent book, not only for kids to learn the colors and order of a rainbow, but also to talk about different animals and their colors. I read this book with my kindergarten class and they loved it -- especially how the ribbons pop up after every turn of the page. Overall a great book for learning or just for reading aloud!

This book is wonderful on so many levels! Adorable, bright illustrations...educational...entertaining story...my 2 1/2 year old son loves this book. The pop up ribbons are a wonderful idea and really hold his interest. The book is also well constructed (a must for pop ups and toddlers!) I would highly recommend this book and it will be on my Christmas shopping list this year for all my nieces and nephews! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Looking for something a little different?, August 16, 2001
By
I just picked this book up for my 2-1/2 year old daughter. She was so intrigued by the ribbons, just kept turning the pages, then flipping them back. As each page is turned, another color ribbon appears. The last page has a large pop-up rainbow (paper, not ribbons). The story is simple. Baby bunny goes to ask each of his friends "What makes a rainbow?" Each of his friends answers based on their own personal color (red ladybug, orange fox, yellow chick, green grasshopper, blue bluebird & purple butterfly). Baby bunny learns that rainbows are made up of rain, colors and sunshine. The text is easy, my daughter was repeating it after several readings and enjoys hearing me re-tell the story even without the book - as she calls out each color. The book seems pretty sturdy and I haven't had any problems with the ribbons, although my daughter has yet to pull on them very hard.

5.0 out of 5 stars best book for baby!, November 26, 2003

"what makes a rainbow?" A GREAT BOOK!
Building a reading library for a newborn can be a tedious, costly process. I started buying books for my new granddaughter in April. Lots of books, not too many good ones. Fortunately, I found this book. The bright colors, hardboard construction and simple, straightforward style make keeping my grandbaby interested a breeze. She settles right down when I open the pages and let her feel the ribbons - with each page another colored ribbon appears -- teaching her about cause and effect, color and texture. This is one of her favorite books and I only wish there were more books like it.
Wanting to read to your child is great, keeping them interested can be a challenge. For babies, books with pages that don't rip, pop-ups that don't tear and bright colors to excite them helps them stay focused.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ingredients to a Rainbow, December 9, 2002
A Kid's Review
I think everyone has had a chance to go outside after it rains and notice a bright rainbow hight up in the sky. I know I have, and the first thing I always notice is how many colors their are in it. This book really brought that out with its pictures. It showed all the ingredients and gave all the colors that really make up a rainbow. They not only gave examples of animals for the colors, but they used a very creative way of showing the reader examples. Since it was a pop-up book, the things that would pop up would be ribbons that represented the color in which the book was speaking of. I'm pretty sure that young readers that read this book would find this book not to be a very big bore. They would be attracted by the many varieties of colors in the pictures. I also noticed that this book not only teaches younger children colors, but it can also teach them some different animals. But all together in the end, it showed the ingredients of a magnificent looking rainbow. All it needs is rain, colors(red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple), and sunshine. Now that's what makes a rainbow.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is one of our favorites!, January 10, 2007
My two-year-old loves to tell people exactly "what makes a rainbow" because of this book. The ribbons are a bright, fun, tactile feature, and he loves to point to each new color and call out that color in the story when each animal tells little rabbit their color in the rainbow (example: ladybug tells little rabbit that red makes a rainbow, fox says orange, etc.) This book is definitely on our favorites list!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm, subtle and likely unintentional gender discrimination, October 31, 2010
By
All of the male characters in this book are referred to as Mister, giving them some authority and respect. All of the female characters aren't given any formality referred to as "little chick, mamma or their animal "name". My kids love the story and even I just noticed this difference but I thought I would mention it for shoppers that are concerned about this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!, January 14, 2007

We LOVE this book. My 3 yr old has us read this over and over! It may not be completely accurate as far as how a rainbow technically goes, but it's a wonderful book for teaching small children the basic idea. Besides, at this age I don't think she'd comprehend the difference between blue, indigo, and violet. If she knows blue and purple I'm more than happy. How many adults could actually pick out indigo anyway? Or how often do you ever hear the term even used? This book is a must for anyone wanting to teach/reinforce colors to small children. It's fun!
