What Manner of Man
A Biography of Martin Luther King Jr. Author: Lerone Bennett I had always been interested in Martin Luther King Jr. I first became interested in Reverend King after hearing his famous speech "I have a dream". I enjoyed this book because I got to learn about how he came to become a great civil right leader, pastor and orator. When Martin was a young man attending mostly white school and colleges, he didn't want people to perceive of him as the stereotypical African American. He studied everything he could get his hands on and even pressed his own clothes daily. I enjoyed reading the chapter on his courting of Coretta Scott. Beginning with the Rosa Parks bus incident, and through Dr King's studies of Jesus and Gandhi, he was able to change the history of civil rights through mass civil disobedience and non-violence. It saddens me that Dr. King's life was cut short, but I am glad that he will always be remembered and discussed. by Tiedra Armijo, SFCC reading class |
