Keira has a problem. She believes she does not have a "real" family. She knows a real family is supposed to have a mom and a dad. After spending time with a variety of families, Keira learns something. She comes to realize that a real family is not supposed to have anything. A real family is a group of people that love each other. That is what matters most. This story is about all kinds of families and how there is no one right way to be a family. It includes families of very different structures that all have one thing in common: love. The people in these families love each other and that is why each family works. This story is about redefining the notion of family. This story is about valuing all families.

What Matters Most teaches kids in a simple fashion that what matters most is to be loved--no matter what shape or size your family comes from. I had gotten it for my nephew before he questions about his step family. I loved it so much that I got another copy for my niece. Both of them love hearing the story. I highly recommend this book to teach kids about differences in family and relationships in a loving and accepting way.

This is a really great book that explains non-traditional family issues in a way that young kids can understand. It emphasizes the importance of having parents who care about their children, regardless of their family situation.

I gave this book an "ok" rating because when I was done reading it, my 7 yr old daughter said "I liked that book". I originally bought this book to help, on a child's level, my daughter feel more comfortable and normal in our blended family. My daughter now has a step-father and two siblings so it "close" to traditional. However, this book touches on EVERY type of family. Same-sex marraiges too which I wasn't exactly sure I wanted to bring up right now.... I didn't think or expect I'd be explaining all these other relationships too. But I guess in the long run, it was a STRONG opener but an opener none the less for conversation.
