Welcome to the town of Fairy Cove. In this town, as in many others, there are myths and legends. The most famous is Fairy Cove's Night Man. The town fostered stories to sell tourists ball caps, shirts, and mugs. At times, the businesses even hired a man to act the part, roaming the town at night, dressed in rags and a shaggy wig, fascinating the tourists.

Cyd Callahan had a hard childhood. Now grown, she worked in real estate. To Cyd, the Night Man was real! Since childhood he haunted her dreams and she still never left her home after dark. He peeked into her window at night. The mornings afterward, Cyd found little carved fairies and ugly gnomes on her doorstep. Little reminders that he was watching her and that someday he would kill her.

Ewan Locklain held Cyd many nights when they were little. He rocked her as her little body trembled in fear. At eighteen, he made sure his sister, Hallie, was safe from their aunt, Angela Greer, and left town. He returned to find Cyd a grown woman, one he wanted to hold onto for totally different reasons than before. He purchased Lochlain Boat Shop, which his father used to own, and settled in to stay. It was a prime piece of property that Cyd had her eye on for some time now She was determined that Ewan would sell to her. And Ewan looked forward to their encounters. He could tell that Cyd still feared the Night Man, a myth. He was determined to find out why. At the same time, his sister was having problems with her ex-husband, Allan. Allan wanted something from Hallie. The fact that Angela was involved just made things worse. During it all, the Night Man watched and soon he would make his final move.

***** Here is a novel that has the perfect combination of romance and suspense. From the first page this story grabbed hold of me. Whenever I was not reading it, I was thinking about it. It was never far from my mind. That is the work of talent! Highly recommended reading! *****

I think it was supposed to be witty banter, but it isn't. I kept hoping they'd just kill each other and put the three of us (them and me) out of our misery. Evil Aunt Angela might as well be wearing a witches cape and passing out poison apples -- that's how subtle this is. Then there's the plot. I won't go into detail other than to say, give me a break. The nonsensical, purely-for-melodrama twists and turns gave me a headache. Anyone with good taste in books needs to avoid this novel.

2.0 out of 5 stars Trite dialog makes this potboiler lukewarm at best, July 6, 2005
By
This review is from: What Memories Remain (Mass Market Paperback)
Ewan Lochlain returns to his home town of Fairy Cove to uncover the truth surrounding his parent's deaths in a boating accident 21 years earlier, leaving him and his sister at the hands of their evil aunt Angela, who had an obsession for Ewan's dad.

Cyd (aka Molly Claire) is the daughter of the town slut. She has nightmares stemming back to an incident when she was six. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to guess what that incident involved. Now grown up, she is only interested in making money, with a cash register for a heart.

This is yet another bad boy returns to his hometown to rescue the over-30 virginal damsel in distress who saved herself for him, only to not realize it at the time. And the dialog is so grating. Her refers to her constantly as "darling mine" and "dear heart"... what is this, 1876? No contemporary guy under 60 would talk like that.

The plot, while interesting, is not well drawn out. There is really nothing likable about Cyd to attract the lust of Ewan. She is rude and just annoying - not sure what he sees in her, particularly since she constantly refers to him as an idiot. I found all their interactions to be annoying - her constant harping on him selling his land was so redundant. I was kind of hoping someone would the darned bogey man get her and put us out of our misery. The ending was clichéd and abrupt, trying to hard too wrap things up.

The more interesting romance (by far) involved Ewan's sister and his best friend, Sean. Unfortunately, no real storyline was devoted to the much more appealing pair.

1.0 out of 5 stars Maybe for kindling... (a few spoilers), August 25, 2004

I agree with the first reviewer. This book made me feel stupid just reading it, I think a trained monkey could have written a better book. The plot sounded good but given the introduction of a few select characters made the ending really pridictable. And the fact that only 1 character supposedly died but his body was never found, hmmmm.... maybe he's still alive, yup! he sure is, duh! Ewan could be a real jerk at times especially when he teased her about stuff that only someone who hates you should. Cyd was a terrible character, she was too bossy to ever be likable and her nightmares and fear of the nightman, which should have been scary, were actually laughable. Plus her interaction with Ewan you wanted to just smack her, there is no way to believe that they just fell in love at the end, and their love scenes were super dull and unimaginative. There were were times reading it when I wondered why I should bother continuing, when I could have better spend the time doing anything else. Hallie was a nice character and I just kept waiting for when she would get with Sean. I also liked Angela she was pretty damn evil, and I wanted to see what happened. The whole back part of the book made you think that Cyd's life was in danger and you thought there might be some suspense and drama, but nope it just fizzled out and left you going huh?!? that was it? It ties up the loose ends but the characters break the law and it's okay, but it doesn't really make you feel that way. Try borrowing it from the library, or it you can get it cheap off e-bay, but there are plenty of better books out there, especially when it comes to the murder, suspense, mystery, romance genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars solid contemporary romantic suspense, April 29, 2004
This review is from: What Memories Remain (Mass Market Paperback)
His parents died in a boating accident in Lake Michigan in which most of the townsfolk of Fairy Cove feel his dad killed his mom. His acrimonious "Dear" Aunt Augusta Greer, the town's matriarchal leader, treats her nephew Ewan Lochlain and his younger sister Hallie like pariahs. When he turned eighteen, Ewan insured his sister was safe from his aunt before fleeing town vowing to return one day to confront his aunt and learn the truth.

Fifteen years later, Ewan is back, needing to know what really happened to his parents. He still regrets that he left behind Hallie and her best friend Cyd Callahan, the daughter of a drug addict prostitute though he believes he did the right thing. He knows Cyd thinks little of him for running away, but now he plans to stay and though she is unaware Cyd is part of his plans. Cyd suffers nightmares that the Night Man is coming for her, which Ewan believes is a repressed memory. As he seeks the truth and feels she is the key, Ewan and Cyd fall in love, but nasty Augusta has her own agenda that excludes her nephew and the whore's daughter.

This contemporary romantic suspense is an exciting tale that will have the audience wonder what happened to the Lochlains. The story line is fun to follow as Cyd and Ewan add respect and trust to their attraction, which finally blossoms into love. Though Angela is too much the queen of ugliness, readers will enjoy this solid tale supplemented by a secondary romance.

1.0 out of 5 stars Where to begin?, July 17, 2009
By
Wendy (Midland, MI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: What Memories Remain (Mass Market Paperback)
This could possibly be one of the worst books I've ever had the misfortune to read. Ewan Lochlain returns to town years later to Cyd, the woman he's always had a thing for. Cyd remembers him fondly but treats him like absolute garbage. Alls I read throughout the book was Ewan was one of the only people (besides his father) who made her truly feel safe. I kept thinking - then why the animosity towards him? This animosity continued 3/4 through the book. Ewan just kept taking whatever Cyd dished out.

I could go on and on about Cyd. I think I just read the whole way through to see what idiotic thing she would do next. She's a 30+ virgin and when she gives it up to Ewan, there is no feelings involved, she just needs to work off some energy? Huh? What virgin does this?

I would write more, because truly there is, but I felt as if I've wasted enough time on this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very Forgetable, September 25, 2008
By
This review is from: What Memories Remain (Mass Market Paperback)
I see I'm discovering this book a few years later, but it hasn't changed. I get 99% of my books from the library so I don't feel like I wasted money on a dud. Just time waiting for it to get better.

Talk about beating a dead horse - I get the message already. Cyd wants the boat shop, why she thinks she's entitled to it beats me, she has nightmares every night, she's afraid of the dark, lots of locks in her home but who has the code and a pass key? Hmmmmm.

Ewan is going to find the truth about his parents disappearance, Aunt Angela is a witch, Uncle Fred is a wimp and so on and on and on.
What drivel

Cait's books just keep getting better. Characters are outstanding and the book just flows from one scene to the next. She weaves her plot well, always coming back to the main theme in a manner that keeps you on the edge of your chair! The unexpected twist of Evan's father being alive just capped it off for me. I loved it!
