This is the best Mother's Day-themed book I've ever read, picture book or otherwise. It's simple, cute, witty, nicely illustrated, hilarious, genius, great for boys.. just great, in general.

The plot itself is simple enough. A boy explains what NOT to give your Mother for Mother's Day--for example, "Do NOT give her a bucket of big, fat worms..."--but then clever adds: "unless she is a bird."

Everybody knows you gotta add animals to a picture book to make it, and it works here too, but more than that I think it speaks a message of diversity which is very important. Families are all different and Mothers are all different. I love that this book says that without really saying it. It's also hilarious, because what isn't funnier than a little boy innocently giving nasty Mother's Day gifts?

Overall, this is a wonderful book that will instantly become a Mother's Day tradition. What's more, I think it's smart enough that youngsters will want to read it year round. The illustrations are great fun and the story is a joy to read aloud. I highly recommend it!

Every time I read this book to my 3 year old daughter, we both laugh with delight. It is a predictable book, but given the target audience of ages 3 and up, that is perfectly fine. The story goes through multiple things of not to give your mother on Mother's Day. "Not a bucket of big, fat worms...unless she is a bird. Not a mud puddle...unless she is a pig." I just love the giggles that this book elicits from my daughter. For that reason, it is not a good bedtime book, but we enjoy it at other times of the day.

I've never written a book review, but this book was so cute that I had to. It was a perfect gift for Mothers Day. It's simple, a quick read, funny and adorable. Someone gave it a bad review saying it's not very funny, but it's a kids book. I mean, it's not supposed to be a comedy. It's just something cute to give Mom on Mothers Day. We thought it was clever, perfect and well done!

What mom hasn't had to pretend to eat fake food made of dirt or brightly colored clay after it was thrust upon her with wide-eyed pleas, "Eat mommy-I made this for you!"?

This book, "What NOT to Give Your Mom on Mother's Day" is a colorfully comical book that fosters gratitude for mothers. It is a young boy's list of what he has learned NOT to give his mother. He extends this wisdom after making several attempts to give his astonished/worried mother unconventional gifts that are better suited for other creatures to receive.

Children see various animals that appreciate the gifts that would be too weird for human mothers to truly enjoy. They also learn how each animal uses their particular gift in a wonderful way. Ultimately, the boy discovers which gifts are the very best that he can give to his mother.

The lovely illustrations are bright and cheerful. The boy smiles on every page, seemingly oblivious to his mother's disturbed looks in response to the strange gifts that he proudly presents to her, one by one. There is no sense of condemnation, just good laughs as he gazes adoringly at his troubled mother who tries to maintain her composure in the face of some creepy things.

This cute and funny book is a great read.

I purchased this book to read to my daughter's class on the day they celebrated Mother's Day. It was cute and appealed to boys on what "gross" stuff not to give mom on Mother's Day and it was a hit with the 4-5 year old crowd.

Mom peeked out at the little boy who was tending to his little strawberry patch. He smiled as he decided to hand out a bit of advice on what not to give a mother on Mother's Day. Now a "bucket of big fat, worms" would never do, but if your mom is a bluebird it would be the perfect gift. "Tweet, tweet! Plump, juicy worms!" No, worms will never do. An old ratty looking shoe would never do, unless of course your mom is a dog. "Arf, arf! A new chew toy." No, an old shoe would never do. There is one thing that is a perfect gift, but worms and shoes just aren't. What could that be?

Dead flies are not a good Mother's Day gift unless of course you are a spider. "Munch, munch! Yummy!" No, dead flies will never do. The same thing goes for a rotting log, unless of course your mom is a salamander. "Slip, slide! Just right for laying my eggs!" No, a rotting log would never do nor would a block of salt, a pile of sticks, a mound of termites, or a mud puddle. There is a perfect gift, but there are a lot of things that just aren't. What could that possibly be?

This is a charming, delightfully humorous tale of what kind of gifts for mothers just won't do. The little boy in this tale has a sense of humor that will make other little ones laugh. Of course some mothers of the critter ilk, would love the gifts he says not to give a mother on Mother's day. The charming artwork captures every little nuance on his mother's face when she is "horrified" at the gifts. This tale is one that mother's will be reading time and time again by request. Charming, humorous, and fun all rolled into one makes for a good preschool story!

What Not to Give Your Mom on Mother's Day by Martha Simpson is a cute story about a little boy who is giving advice about Mother's Day presents. For example, he doesn't recommend giving her dead flies-- unless she is a spider. He doesn't recommend giving her a mud puddle either-- unless she is a pig. Illustrations of the little boy giving his mom all these strange presents are juxtaposed with the animal moms who would actually really like them. Illustrator Jana Christy does a wonderful job capturing the whimsy in these contrasts, and she nails the mom's bewildered (and sometimes dismayed) expressions every single time.

What Not to Give Your Mom on Mother's Day is a simple and sweet picture book for preschool-aged kids. My children enjoy the bright pictures and silly gift ideas. They also like the ending when the little boy advises that the best present for moms is actually a hug and a kiss. Then they usually end up brainstorming other ideas for their mom.

Overall, I have been very happy with ordering this book for my children. It's great to read at Mother's Day or any time of the year.

I love reading books to my granddaughter, and even though Mother's day was over, there are many other holidays that involve giving gifts to Moms, so we sat down together.

At first grade, she could actually read a majority of the words, but always enjoys listening. We read through and had fun. About half way through she realized that on the animal pages there were both a baby and a Mom, so we had to go back and look. When we got done, we went back and talked about the expressions and characters that were there.

And (spoiler alert) We now have the words "A big hug and a big kiss" on the whiteboard we use to remind her of the best gift for her Mom.

The new word and animal she learned was salamander. New words are fun.

Granddaughter votes this five stars.

My daughter is three years old, and while she certainly understands the concept of birthdays and Christmas - *Mother'sDay* was a bit to abstract for her to grasp. The story of "What NOT to give Your Mom for Mother's Day" helped her understand that MD is a special day for mommy. The story is simple and pretty basic - so simple that kids over 5 or 6 may get bored after a couple of readings.

Notes -

- The story is fun and explores the wrong things to get mom...unless she is a particular animal (bat, pig, or other animal).

- The illustrations are cute but basic

- My daughter had a couple of big giggles over some of the potential presents.

Final Verdict - A cute gift, especially for a child to give his or her mother.

4 Stars

I loved this book. The illustrations are awesome. It shows tons of mothers with their children, both human and animals. It has a great premise about how human mothers probably don't like the same kind of gifts as animal mothers would like.

It has a great ending for a book, too. I read the entire book in my video, so if you want spoilers, watch my video.

Pros:
+Great children's book
+Fun illustrations. Beautifully illustrated.
+Great teaching tool about various animals and what they like
+Great for every day of the year, not just Mother's Day

Cons:
-Very short book. Only takes a minute to read.
