5.0 out of 5 stars THE Thirties voice after Bing, July 1, 2005
This review is from: Oh What a Night for Romancing (Audio CD)
You may not know who Sam Browne is but his voice is the stereotypical voice of late twenties and early thirties music. He was a crooner who had a perfect understanding of the lyrics of these great songs. He sang on thousands of British recordings in the thirties. It is unusual that so little of his music is available as his voice was beautiful. This is a welcome collection and I hope that there will be more to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars my grandad, December 15, 2005
This review is from: Oh What a Night for Romancing (Audio CD)
listening to the samples of my grandfather singing is great. My favourite songs are cheek to cheek and i get along without you very well. They are both very familiar to me.I didnt know this c.d existed, usually he is recorded as a guest singer with the big bands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vocalist Who Was In Constant Demand, July 13, 2007
This review is from: Oh What a Night for Romancing (Audio CD)
Sam Browne recorded over 2,000 songs with a great variety of British dance bands, and this compilation covers the period from 1930 to 1949. It shows off not only his fine voice, good ear and clear diction, but also the excellent accompaniments. He may have lacked the ability to syncopate freely, which is apparent on "Cheek To Cheek", but that is a minor quibble.

The sound is first-rate, and although the tracks come from a wide variety of sources (including the "unbreakable" Durium record) the acoustic is consistent and the dynamics have been retained, offering nearly 80 minutes of glorious music.
