Product Description

Hurt No More

No one who works at a computer or drives a car will be surprised to learn that neck pain is on the rise. About 70 million people in the United States have had neck pain, and the incidence is increasing. Like back pain, neck pain can become a constant plague that is both mysterious and difficult to treat.

Here at last is help. In What to Do for a Pain in the Neck, one of today's leading experts on neck pain provides a broad range of treatments and preventive measures so that you do not have to learn how to live with pain -- you can banish it.

Combining his own extensive experience with the best scientific information available, Dr. Jerome Schofferman presents strategies ranging from such simple tips as rearranging your desk, workstation, and computer height to daily exercise routines to aggressive treatments requiring professional care. Among the areas he explores in depth are

  • Potential causes of neck pain
  • Neck-related headaches
  • Whiplash (including the effects of litigation on the rate of recovery)
  • What to expect from a chiropractor or physical therapist
  • Over-the-counter and prescription pain medications
  • Acupuncture, meditation, magnet healing, massage, and other complementary therapies
  • First aid for intermittent flare-ups

    About the Author

An associate editor of Spine, he has lectured to orthopedic and neurosurgeons, pain specialists, and other physician groups, as well as to the insurance industry and the general public. He lives in Sausalito, California.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a book that addresses neck pain in a no nonsense way, September 2, 2001
This book not only gave me tools to help my neck pain subside, it helped me understand why I had it and what I could do to help myself before getting yet another professional opionion. The chapter on "Neck first aid" has been particularly helpful. The straight-forward instructions, including simple to perform exercises and useful principles are easy to follow. I also like the author's way of addressing the reader. He never talks down to the reader and imparts medical information that no doctor has ever bothered to explain to me before. He comes across as personable and approachable, and I wish I lived closer to his office so I could see him if I needed to!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelent Book, my headaches are gone!, October 9, 2002
By Ana Barend (Haleiwa, HI United States) - See all my reviews
This book is amazing. I did regularly for a week the series of "First Aid Neck Exercises" and my neck related headaches went away. It is super simple to understand and very educational. I know a lot more about necks now. My massage therapist, who has a herniated disk in the neck, is now practicing the exercises and he has seen much improvement. If you have pain in your neck, BUY THIS BOOK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensible for anyone with neck problems, March 15, 2002
By Jorg Rupf (Oakland, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This book is a truly complete guide to explaining and treating neck problems. Written by an MD in easily understandable language, it does not stop at discussing classical remedies physicians offer for spine problems. It incorporates and validates non-classical methods such as chiropractic manipulations and acupuncture. The best part are the chapters on physical therapy: The exercises are clearly explained and can be understood and performed with or without professional help. I had serious neck pain with nerve involvment, which made it impossible for me to lie on my back without pain. Within a month of doing the exercises(on my own), I am completely pain free and back to my former activities. All of this without one doctor's visit. What a bargain!
