Book Description

Berkley Sensation December 2, 2008
Only Luke Bradley knows the secret of his fellow pirate Sam Steele: Sam is actually Samantha, a woman driven by revenge.

Though Sam sails her stolen ship under a pirate flag, there is no creature more loathsome to her than a scalawag. As they journey across the unpredictable Caribbean Sea, Luke finds that making a criminal pay for his sins is second to the quest to win Sam’s heart.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Beattie's debut, a 1660s Caribbean pirate romance, is heavy on swashbuckling and light on character development. Five years before, a brigand called Dervish killed Samantha Fines family. She and her friend Joe escaped the massacre, but wound up enslaved by an evil plantation owner, so they stole his ship and turned pirate, with Sam cross-dressing as Capt. Sam Steele. Now she's decided to break one-eyed pirate Luke Bradley out of jail and get his help finding Dervish When sparks fly between Luke and Sam, she fears he will break her heart—he's a pirate, after all—and he believes she's too good for him. This very traditional but fun romance features a feisty heroine, a tortured hero and a sassy parrot along with strong doses of betrayal, action and plenty of cunning. (Dec.)

More About the Author

Michelle Beattie was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and raised on her grandfather's homestead near Beaumont, Alberta. She didn't fall in love with reading until after high school and then turned to historical romances, mostly westerns, for her romance fix. If you ask her why westerns, she'll say it's because of the chivalry. Of course men in boots and cowboy hats didn't hurt either!

It took 12 years and four completed manuscripts before she sold her first book, What A Pirate Desires, a historical pirate adventure. Since then she's sold two more, all part of her pirate series. Why pirates? Two words. Johnny Depp.

Not one who likes to be limited, Michelle likes to write any story that pulls at her heart and bulldozes its way through her mind, demanding to be told. And so, besides westerns and pirates, she also wrote a contemporary novel, Love By Accident, that takes place in her beautiful home province, Alberta.

She's an avid reader, enjoys golfing, playing scrabble, and dancing. She is addicted to Facebook, Survivor and thinks it's high time an author appears on Dancing with the Stars! Not that she's volunteering, she's not that flexible!

Loved this book. Read it in two days. Of course I wish I would have read this book first instead of "Romancing the Pirate", but in either case both of them are good and I think Michelle did a great job!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Pirate Desires, May 9, 2009
This review is from: What a Pirate Desires (Berkley Sensation) (Paperback)
Samantha Fine's entire family was slaughtered five years ago by a man only known as Dervish. Samantha didn't perish that night but wished she had as she was enslaved by a vile plantation owner along with her friend Joe. As soon as they are able both escape and Samantha's revenge against the man that murdered her family begins. It begins with her transformation from Samantha Fine to Sam Steele, a pirate of the seas. Her crew knows she is a woman but no matter, Sam is feared for the raider that she is. When she needs help to find Dervish, she successfully finds Luke Bradley; a man who used to sail with Dervish and who now wants him just as much as Sam.

Swashbuckling action aside, What a Pirate Desires is a good read - the characters were somewhat cliché but I found the wit that Samantha possessed quite humorous and loved the banter between she and Luke. I couldn't find any fault with What a Pirate Desires and actually enjoyed a pleasant afternoon read.

5.0 out of 5 stars terrific seventeenth century High Seas pirate romance, December 4, 2008
This review is from: What a Pirate Desires (Berkley Sensation) (Paperback)
In 1661 one thing drives Samantha Fine; vengeance against vicious Captain Dervish for what he did five years ago in the Caribbean. He is the reason she became pirate Captain Sam Steele, whose loyal crew know her gender but none will gossip about this factoid because they successfully raid merchant and pirate vessels. They are so good Captain Sam is the most feared person on the sea.

The only person besides her crew to know Sam's gender is incarcerated Luke Bradley, a former member of Dervish's cruel crew. Sam rescues Luke demanding he will lead her to Dervish. As they become acquainted with one another while arguing they fall in love, but both agree that destroying Dervish whom they each loathes comes before any future plans beyond that.

This terrific seventeenth century High Seas pirate romance works because Samantha comes across as an avenging sea-she pirate captain. Her verbal battles with Luke are amusing with word play sharper than sword play. Fans will enjoy this fine at sea cat and mouse tale while wondering whether it will be Sam, Samantha, or neither to survive the expected combat with Dervish.
