5.0 out of 5 stars It's Silly! It's Fun! It's A Great Book!
This was our first potty book - a gift from Grandma. If you've spent any potty training time you know you've got to have patience while you wait...and wait...and wait. This book helped to pass the time. My daughter loved to lift the flaps and pull the tabs. Eventually she began to "read" it for herself. After two kids this book has seen better days (and lots of...

2.0 out of 5 stars Why Show a Toddler Wearing the Potty Chair on His Head?
Recently I've ordered quite a few potty training books and other aides, and this has to be one of the all-time worst. This isn't the first book that gives kids 'bright ideas' like how to stuff toys or food (yes-this book mentions that you don't put popcorn in the potty chair..huh?) in the potty chair or dump it on your head. Have any of these authors actually...

This review is from: What Do You Do With A Potty? An Important Pop-up Book (Board book)
This was our first potty book - a gift from Grandma. If you've spent any potty training time you know you've got to have patience while you wait...and wait...and wait. This book helped to pass the time. My daughter loved to lift the flaps and pull the tabs. Eventually she began to "read" it for herself. After two kids this book has seen better days (and lots of scotch tape). But hopefully it will make it through our third child!

We have read almost every potty book available on the market as of 9/2003 (over two dozen!). Most fit into two categories: INSTRUCTIONAL books that introduce the skills needed to master the potty; and those that are primarily ENTERTAINING, for children who understand what is supposed to happen on the potty, but need extra time to make it happen.

I think What Do You Do With A Potty fits more in the INSTRUCTIONAL category for the following reasons:

1) It identifies the purpose of the potty.
2) It specifies bodily functions ("poopy" and "tinkle" in this case)
3) Shows the transition from diapers to big kid underwear.
4) Includes the important steps such wiping, flushing, and hand washing.

For other activity books on this same subject, try Let's Go Potty by Moira Butterfield or Sara's Potty by Harriet Ziefert.

So what can you do with this book? Enjoy it again and again!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great interactive book...but easily destroyed by 2 yr. old!, January 3, 1999
This review is from: What Do You Do With A Potty? An Important Pop-up Book (Board book)
My daughter loved this book! The movable parts even made her demand her potty so that she could try the same movements as the book's character! In the first hour, though, she tore one of the tabs. Still, a fun and engaging book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for the Potty trainer, July 14, 2000

This review is from: What Do You Do With A Potty? An Important Pop-up Book (Board book)
My daughter loves this book. I bought it when we decided it was time to potty train. Prior to the book, my daughter just didn't understand what the potty was for, when she read the book and played with the pop-up features, she FINALLY understood. It took about a week after buying the book before she was fully trained (with a few accidents of course).

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Book!!, June 1, 2001
This review is from: What Do You Do With A Potty? An Important Pop-up Book (Board book)
I looked at all the books in the library and really didn't like them too much. I bought this based on the reviews written here. My son loves this book. He has had a potty for a long time, but only became interested in sitting on it after reading this book. A few days later he actually started going in it! I think he was ready, but the book was a great catalyst. Lots of fun and very straightforward. I found some of the other books too abstract.

2.0 out of 5 stars Why Show a Toddler Wearing the Potty Chair on His Head?, July 12, 2005
This review is from: What Do You Do With A Potty? An Important Pop-up Book (Board book)
Have any of these authors actually potty-trained a real child?. Please just give us a book with a simple step-by-step guide. I rated some of the other books higher that portray kids doing silly things with the chair because at least they are easier to follow. This one skips all over the place and concludes by showing a baby smiling and sleeping snugly in DIAPERS in his crib w/ a boy walking out of the bathroom on the right. I don't know how your kiddo would react, but I could see it on my son's face: He was thinking, "Look at the happy baby who can just pee away in his diaper without having to mess with all this potty training business" --I want to be him! There a couple of reviewers who mentioned that this book was not a must-own...and it's not. The only feature I like are the flaps, but trust me - YOU COULD WRITE A BETTER, MORE CLEAR STORYLINE THAN THIS ONE. If you are looking for a clear, instructional book to provide an intro to potty training to your toddler, see: Potty Time! : (Toddlers) (Learning Ladders) by BETTY REICHMEIER.

My objective in purchasing this book for my two-year old daughter was to get her to overcome her fear of the potty, and to be more patient. Now she can sit and look at the book, while she sits on the potty.

So far it is working quite well. My only criticism is that little kinds tend to rip the pop-up pictures and levers.

I bought this book for my son in March when I began potty training my son. He loves it. He has literally worn it out. Every time another piece falls off, he brings it to me to put in the book hospital. He is potty training now and "reads" his book almost every time he uses the potty.

4.0 out of 5 stars A hit so far!, May 16, 2000

My 2yr old had no interest in Once Upon a Potty - I bought this book because of the fun pull tabs (it is not really a "pop-up" book). So far we have read it every night & I was even able to get him to sit on his potty(briefly!) last night.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pop-up fun, January 7, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: What Do You Do With A Potty? An Important Pop-up Book (Board book)
Very cute book, however, the "pop-up" pieces were a little too tempting to my 2 year old. She's managed to tear off a few of the moving pieces.

Of the books that I've bought, though, this one is still her favorite, missing pieces and all.

We had tried every thing to potty train our son. He seemed intimitated by the potty. After we read this book he couldn't wait to try. This book is easy for kids to relate to and they love pulling the tabs.
