Book Description

Merkiaari Wars S. May 1, 2007
Humanity's last encounter with aliens saw six point two billion people killed in a war with the Merkiaari that had spanned decades. Only by the grace of God and the use of Nanotechnology were they defeated. The result of that Nanotech? Vipers, a regiment of super soldiers tasked with protecting the Alliance and annihilating the Merki. It was a job they performed with distinction, a job they completed almost two centuries ago. a job that had cost them their humanity. Thurston is an unimportant border world with a problem, a Marine type problem. Not the sort of place Gunnery Sergeant Gina Fuentez expected to find one of the fabled Viper cyborgs, but that's just what she discovers when a simple mission to extract an operative from a terrorist camp leads to a firefight and two of her squad dead. With friends dying around her and a world coming apart at the seams, Gina must decide if the Marine Corps is really her home, or just a stopping place to where she really belongs.

I have to say I the story really took hold of me. It is a very well paced military scifi read. The action was complete and well discribed. The key characters had solid personal development so the reader can "feel" them. I purchase new e-book authors generally after they have many positive reviews but I took a chance here and found myself really hoping a follow up book will come soon to broaden the adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent story, January 2, 2012

This review is from: What Price Honour (Merkiaari Wars S.) (Paperback)
This book reminds me of the work of Tanya Huff or Ian Douglas. The story is first class, the characters and the tech are believable and so is the stupidity of the politicians..Mr. Cooper is writing a sequel and I'll definitely buy it. The Marines and the Marine Corps he portrays reminded me of my days in the Corps. The "enhanced" troops are much better thought out and believable than the "Cobras" in my opinion. I give it five stars in spite of some spelling and other editorial errors in the Kindle edition. Absolutely one of the best bargains I've found at the Kindle (or hard back) price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good military sci-fi, December 26, 2011

I enjoyed this book quite a lot. I think the main characters were flushed out pretty well. The military jargon seem to be well done as well. It must be a fine line between using authentic military jargon and yet making it accessible to the general public and I feel the author did well. The action was pretty consistent throughout the book which is always good, although it lagged a little it wasn't bad. I like the fact that while the politics are mentioned and even shown they were not a true separate plot line and the focal point remained on the two main characters and the action at the front line. I don't know if it is but I definitely can see this as the first book in a series that the author should be able to keep going for a world. A universe spanning war is always good for multiple books and this one sets a good tone. I am looking forward to any additional books.
