Book Description

January 9, 2008 0495504114 978-0495504115 2
By focusing on material most relevant to the Introductory Psychology course while maintaining the narrative flow, Ellen Pastorino and Susann Doyle-Portillo invite students to see the big picture of psychology, rather than a collection of fragmented ideas. With an unparalleled integration of diversity, applications, and critical thinking, WHAT IS PSYCHOLOGY? captures and holds students' interest using "The Big Picture," a real-life story of a person whose experience illustrates the concepts of the chapter. Upon entering this course, students ask, "Why should Psychology matter to me?" Drawing from their own research and first-hand work in classrooms on assessment, inclusion, and reaching under-prepared students, Pastorino and Doyle-Portillo answer this question using practical everyday examples focused on the student (e.g., asking students to design a research study based on the hypothesis that listening to rock and roll facilitates studying).

Editorial Reviews

Review

"10-out-of-10 student evaluations preferred Pastorino/Doyle over our current text. The examples and figures from What Is Psychology? are more specific, precise, and applicable to self, others, and everyday life experiences. The text reads so very well. The pages in What Is Psychology? are crisp and clean. They draw the eye to the pictures, figures, activities, review boxes, etc. I feel like this is a book that I would like to use to get my students into the book one-page-at-a-time." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Psych!, January 10, 2012

It is pretty decent for a textbook, I prefer reading the actual textbook though, the kindle makes me read slower and it feels like it(and actually doesa) take a lot longer to finish a chapter. Ebay has some good deals on textbooks if you search by the ISBN.

3.0 out of 5 stars content, September 20, 2011

This review is from: What is Psychology? (Paperback)
The price of this book was a steal. It is the much older edition of what my professor actually wanted the class to purchase, but i found that it wasn't a big issue. This book contains all the same exact contents as the new edition, except certain chapters are out of order. This was not a big deal. I recommend this for anyone on a low college budget who does not want to spend too much :)

Overall it's an easy read. Theories are explained clearly. only thing is my school
Sells the version without hardcover and it's much lighter. Got mine for a deal here but it's VERY heavy to bring to class. I wouldn't have brought it but the professor requested for the book to be in so mehh.
