Though slightly dated (it was produced in 1985) this film offers an excellent overview of the transgendered world. I was very interested in the interviews of Christine Jorgensen (the world's first famous transsexual) and Virginia Prince (Grand Dame of transvestites, and publisher of Transvestia magazine). Other tranvestites and transsexuals tell their own stories, focusing particularly on the problems of acceptance by family and society. I reccommend this for anyone wishing to learn more about the transgendered.

Educational overview of gender confusion.,

Very moving and illuminating look at the manifestation of gender confusion in transsexuality and transvesticism. By objectively focusing on personal case studies the dilemmas and emotions faced by those who are asking "What Sex Am I?" are very understandable to the most traditional heterosexual.

I am a transsexual, and live and breathe the Transgender community. I found this documentary to explain very well the differences between male-to-female transsexuals, female-to-male transsexuals, and transvestites. Very accurate, fairly reported - including both sides of the issues.

Produced years before the publication of J. Michael Bailey's extraordinary book The Man Who Would Be Queen, What Sex Am I? is a valuable depiction of transsexuality. In fact, the film is a vivid illustration of the two kinds of transsexuality clinically investigated by another pioneer, Dr. Raymond Blanchard. I urge anyone interested in transsexuality to view this film, but only after reading Bailey's book. You will see that the film portrays the complicated lives of transsexuals---and illustrates the major "types" of transsexuality. My only wish: a more explicit discussion of autogynephilia and homosexual transsexuality.
The film was years ahead of its time. |
