Book Description

0860914917 978-0860914914 September 1994
This work attempts to overturn gender conventions by presenting a range of images of the erotic male object, all produced by women. Drawing on the exhibition of the same name, "What she Wants" combines the work of women artists and photographers with commentary about their images and the issues raised. The artists featured in this book are: Barbara deGenevieve, Flow Fox, Herlinde Koebl; Grace Lau; Brigitte Maria Mayer; Robin Shaw; and Hermione Wiltshire. The text accompanying their art is provided by Linda Williams, the author of "Hard Core", Claire Pajackzkowska, Lola Young, Cherry Smyth and Naomi Salaman.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Female investigations of the male nude are still relatively rare. Here, editor Salaman tries to reverse the traditional relationship of male artist and female subject and establish an erotic aesthetic that is purely from a woman's point of view. In contrast to the weighty, intelligent essays by several writers, the illustrations are often lighthearted and irreverent. Originally the catalog accompanying an international traveling exhibit named in response to a comment made by Freud regarding what women want, this work invites the viewer to see men as women do through art. Sampling the work of 64 artists, it is in many ways a pioneer effort. Recommended for large public and academic libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars "What She Wants": Bold and Beautiful Visions for Men, Too!, January 9, 1997
By A Customer
Highly recommended book for women (and men) who are photography enthusiasts, gender observers, and collectors of erotic photography. As a white male, age 42, I enjoyed this book immensely! The photography, from several highly creative women photographers, is displayed at the top of its form: provocative and beautiful; disturbing and erotic. Photographers like the talented Jacqueline Kennedy of London--whose fabulous print "Other Chambers" is in this collection--offer an erotic vision of women looking at man as sexual creature, sexual object. You'll learn that a penis can be a humorous object for women, mystical , magical and sometimes ugly. Each photograph, like Kennedy's bold and erotic image of a sexually mature, elegant woman fisting a passive man, will stimulate much conversation between men and women. This is a small coffee table book that is bound to be picked up and discussed by friends. It is too important a work to be out of print! Perhaps the publisher will reconsider and reissue this book in a larger format edition? Let's hope so!
