Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The coauthors of Men Who Can't Love promise women "wisdom without pain" in this slick self-help guide to ideal romantic relationships. Describing women caught in various unrewarding relationships with men, Carter and Sokol compile a battery of catchy, puerile aphorisms about men and rules of behavior for dealing with them. Readers are warned to avoid "any man who wears his napkin like a bib" as well as one who reads The Satanic Verses on public transportation. Although mixed with some common-sense recommendations, these observations (e.g., "Unless you have good connections at Interpol, think twice before dating an elusive man") generally insult the intentions and intelligence of the reader. First serial to Cosmopolitan; paperback rights to Dell; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Clubs featured alternates.

Steven Carter was born in New York City and raised in New Hyde Park, New York. In the winter of 2007 What Smart Women Know was released in Brazil by Editora Sextante, the publishing company founded by brothers Marcos and Tomas Pereira. Men Like Women Who Like Themselves was released in mid-2008 and spent 45 weeks on Brazil's bestseller lists. The Brazilian edition of Men Who Can't Love was released by Editora Sextante in late 2009, followed by The Secrets of Self-Esteem in May 2010 and This Is How Love Works in September 2011. Editora Sextante has sold over two million copies of these Carter/Sokol titles in Brazil since the first release. 5.0 out of 5 stars Best Tool for Women!, April 27, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: What Smart Women Know (Paperback)
This book lived up to its reviews, and far exceeded all of my expectations for greatness. I wish I'd had this as a teenager before I destroyed my 37 years with abusive relationships & problems related to my lack of self-worth (due to childhood trauma, abuse & rapes). Then again, I might not have been ready to absorb it then.

In any case, this is a MUST HAVE for any woman who's ever been abused, exploited, used or had a string of abusive relationships--or wants to avoid them, meaning every woman alive. Every page described common errors women have made, and I related to all of them! This book covers every single situation anyone could encounter in relationships, even what red flags to look for on 1st dates, with real-life examples everyone will recognize. I found myself laughing at some of my mistakes & grateful for the explicit instructions on how to avoid repeating them.

It is now my most-valuable tool towards one day having a mutually healthy life partner. In the meantime, it also will help with all of my other relationships with friends, family, co-workers, etc. I've written in the margins, highlighted just about every page, and will refer to it time & time again as life's challenges give me opportunities to practice the wisdom between these priceless pages. It will be the best money you've ever spent & you're worth it. :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the kind of woman I would like to date, September 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: What Smart Women Know (Paperback)
I'm a guy and I just read this book to get an understanding of a woman's psyche. I wish all women would read this book. The woman who knows what smart women know is the kind of woman I would love to date. A woman who knows all these things and practices them would be a sure, confident, loving and non-manipulative woman who is sure to succeed with men!

2.0 out of 5 stars I was disappointed, August 8, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: What Smart Women Know (Paperback)
I consider myself to be a relative smart woman, but after reading the customer reviews I thought that this book would have something to teach me (since I recently have felt not-so-smart about not seeing a commitment issue in a man I have been dating). It was an easy and obvious read. It may be a good book for teenagers or women who have a history of making very bad relationship decisions, but for anyone with any common sense it does not provide much insight. Most of us know to not date liars, alchoholics, abusers, etc...

If you know someone (or are someone) who needs to be told fundamental common sense things, then this book is for you. If you are someone who can occasionally make a not-so-smart decsion, but have the ability to realize it, then I would not recommend this book for you.
