I was recently given the opportunity to review "What a Son Needs From His Dad" by Michael O'Donnell (Bethany House). Having a young son, I was thrilled to review this book! I handed it off to my husband, to be able to get a dad's opinion of the book. Per my husband, this book was a great challenge of how to be the best role model for your son, in ways that will continue to mold his life into what God wants it to be.

From even the early years, he is being molded by what he sees, watches, and hears from his dad, whom he looks up to. This book shared great ideas to help a dad in encouraging your son to grow in a way pleasing to God.

"Be the man you want your son to become and launch a relationship with him that will last a lifetime." GREAT challenge for any Dad!!

I was given this book for free to review. The above comments are my own. I was not asked to write a positive review.

I understand what a single mom feels for their son when the father is not present. I was a single mom until my fiancee came into our lives and forever changed us as a family. I tried to be a mother as well as a father to my son. There are just somethings that no matter how hard you try, only a father can give to his son. Since I have been a tom-boy my entire life, I thought it would be easy to instill those male insights to my son. Boy, was I wrong. I mean, I take him fishing, on nature walks, we build camp fires together, ride the four-wheelers and get muddy together, but it is just not the same as doing it with your dad. As the years went by, before I met Ken (my fiancee), I realized that no matter how hard I tried, I am not his dad. I looked back at when I was a child, and my father was gone a lot. He was a general contractor and travels tri-state to get jobs to support the family. My mom had done the same things with me and my brother, try to give us the "dad" effect while he was gone, as she knew we missed him and all the things he did with us. We always knew it wasn't the same and she was just trying to keep our spirits up until he returned from his jobs.

I can honestly say that having my fiance in Zachary's life has made this little boy turn around completely. Even though I did my best, it really did not warrant the same effectas spending time with your dad. I was a lucky child in the essence that I had both of my parents, together my whole life (29 years), and actually they are still together (35 total years). I believe that just the unity of a family and how a child sees how things run in life affect them later on. I want my children to have the skills and tools to take care of them self as well as a family of their own someday.

Acclaimed author and public speaker Michael O'Donnell's book, What A Son Needs From His Dad - How a Man Prepares His Sons for Life is one of those books that I wish hospitals would give out to new Fathers at the hospital when their sons are born. In the past I had often wished that there was a book that hospitals could give to new parents when their child was born - a book that would instruct them and guide them in every area of life so that they could be the kind of parents that God wants them to be. Now I believe and know such a book exists and that book is The Holy Word of God, The Holy Bible. However, I believe that there also needs to be two separate books - one for each parent - that give good, solid, time-tested advice and words of wisdom concerning how to be a successful Mother or Father. Author O'Donnell's book would be an excellent option for dads.

In the first Chapter of his book author O'Donnell writes that there are seven core issues that every father needs to "work on with his son to lay a foundation of healthy masculine character." Fathers need to prepare their sons to be:
1. Devout disciples for Christ;
2. Good Citizens;
3. Holders of worthy vocations; responsible workers;
4. Choosers of good friends;
5. Sexually chaste; understanding of male sexuality; avoiding the hazards of pornography; and
6. Lovers of their wives; supporters of their marriages.

In Chapter 2 Author O'Donnell writes about "Effective Fathering." This chapter is rich in good sound advice for fathers as to how they can be most effective in their God given role as a dad.

No one can prepare a son for life better than his father. Dads are role models and this book encourages fathers to grow into the kind of men they want their sons to become.

What A Son Needs From His Dad: How A Man Prepares His Sons for Life is a book written specifically to fathers about their role in the family and more specifically in the lives of their sons. This book is a very easy read at only 141 pages and ten chapters. Each chapter addresses areas that are important to instill in the life of a son such as character development, choosing friends, how to be productive and raising industrious sons who have a skill or trade they are good at. The end of each chapter contains a "Thoughts and Discussions" section so your husband can spend some meditative time thinking about what he has read and how to put it into practice in everyday life with his sons.

As a Mom, I will never be able to understand my son the way my husband can. I am thankful that my son will have a Godly father to look up to and share life with because he will be able to relate to him in ways I can't. This book even equips the men in our lives to talk to their sons about hard topics like "the birds and the bees", how to treat women and eventually (hopefully) one day a wife, etc. This book also reminds our husbands what "true" fatherhood is and encourages them to be the kind of father the Bible speaks about.

This would be a wonderful book for any man who has a son because it not only reminds them about their role as the father but it helps show them how to develop a relationship with their son that will last for many years to come. What A Son Needs From His Dad is available through Bethany House Publishers for just $9.99.
