Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1-Goose and Bear return in this wintry tale of friendship. As the pair prepares handmade gifts, a spunky fox kit asks dozens of questions, most importantly, "Is it for me?... I love surprises!" When the answer is negative each time, cheerful Fox creates a gift by wrapping itself in hearts cut from paper. "Ta da! It's me. For you!" Goose and Bear reciprocate with a bright green, buttoned vest. Short sentences and pastel spreads create what's sure to become storytime favorite. The rich indigo skies brilliantly balance the white textures of Bear's fur and Goose's feathers, as well as Fox's russet coat. The kit's bouncy poses and confetti-colored gifts and wrappings add to this festive read.-Gay Lynn Van Vleck, Henrico County Library, Glen Allen, VAα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist

Friends Goose and Bear are back for another small-time, large-format adventure in a situation to which little ones will be able to relate. As the duo quietly wraps presents, Fox pesters them, wanting to know if the presents are for him and pointing out that, if they are, they are inappropriate. Surmising that nothing is being prepared to surprise him, Fox decides to make his own spectacular, splendid surprise. As with previous books, Bloom has crafted a full story with a minimum of words, while the uncluttered, blue-toned illustrations effectively convey emotion through body language and facial expressions. A natural for storytimes and likely to spark lively discussions. Preschool-Grade 1. --Randall Enos

Oh! What a Surprise! is a delightful addition to the Bear and Goose series and a most welcome addition to my Christmas story time collection. It's the perfect length for even the youngest of preschoolers, and reinforces the notion that the best kinds of presents are the ones we make ourselves. Little Fox loves surprises, and when he happens upon first Bear and then Goose making presents that are not for him, he turns his disappointment into a firm resolve to make the best surprise ever. We end things up with all three friends sharing their presents for each other. A very nice story about gift giving that never specifically mentions Christmas, but still manages to convey some important messages for the season.

Bear, Fox, and Goose are as endearing as ever, and the illustrators' use of generous amounts of dark space makes their colors really pop. This is a perfect choice for group sharing, as every kid will be able to identify with Fox's disappointment when he discovers that the presents his friends are making aren't for him, and they will feel Fox's satisfaction at receiving his own surprise - sure to generate thoughts of their own Christmas surprises to come.

I love picture books but don't often find one that I must own. Well, this is one of those "must own" books. It's beautifully illustrated from cover to cover. The characters are sweet. And the simple text is just perfect for a picture book. Kids and adults will enjoy this book.

It's no surprise that Suzanne Bloom has done it again and again. She is the most consistently exciting author for preschoolers today. The voices for Bear and Goose are ideal for echo-reading with the little kids! Suzanne and I co-read from Splendid Friend Indeed a few years ago at a reading conference. I have been using her books ever since. I am delighted to add Oh! What a Surprise! and What Now Bear? to my repertoire of "Bloom" books!

Suzanne, You Are A Gem!! Thanks,
Love, Jim McK.
