Editorial Reviews

Product Description

As a daughter, you tend to view your father as the "smartest man in the world." However, I am luckier than most because, as my permanent teacher, Jaime Richards has taught me that knowledge is a cycle of challenging, questioning, and redefining your own perceptions. His columns are written examples of his teaching method, encouraging students to focus on THE PURPOSE of what it means to be successful. I take his words to heart and hope I can make him as proud of me as I am of him. -Kyrra Richards

In high school, many of my dad's former students, as well as teachers, would approach me in the hallways telling me how much they loved Mr. Richards's column that day. I, without a doubt, always agreed. His columns reflect the passionate and loving man that he is. Not only his students, but adults admire him as a teacher and as a friend. Still, I know that as his daughter, I will always be his biggest fan. -Kylene Richards

5.0 out of 5 stars Jaime Richards is a Torch-Bearer, October 16, 2006
I was Jaime Richards' student ten years ago in the seventh grade, and I have never stopped learning from him. As a young girl, having a teacher who was so real with us students was monumental. He looked through my young age to the person inside, and encouraged all the wonderful things he found there. Everyday, he worked hard to inspire and activate our minds and spirits. Without the few mentors like him in my life, I wouldn't be happy, healthy, and successful today! He held the torch for me, when I didn't even know there was a torch to begin with... =)

As I sat at his recent book signing, and watched the line of students wait eagarly to speak with him, I knew I wasn't the only one. I noticed how the majority of the students were girls, and realized how powerful it is for a male teacher to inspire the warrior in young women. The sky's the limit!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone, truly inspirational!, December 3, 2008
"What It Takes" is a book that anyone working with children must read. Without a doubt this is a favorite gift item; once given the receiver raves about it endlessly. This is a book that inspires you and others to strive to achieve your potential. I read it to my students everyday and I am amazed at the positive reactions I get from them. If this book motivates Jr. High Students, just imagine what it does for others.

5.0 out of 5 stars What-It-Takes should be required reading, August 13, 2008
By Stephanie in CA (California) - See all my reviews
I purchased this book after stumbling across one of the author's weekly columns in a local newspaper. This book is a compilation of some of Mr. Richards' best columns. As I went through the book, I kept putting place marks on the columns I wanted to read to my sons--those with a message I wanted to get through to them. I ended up marking dozens of columns, and as I would read one, invariably my sons would ask me to keep reading more columns. Mr. Richards has a very reader-friendly writing style. It's almost as though you're having a conversation with him (especially when you happen to agree with a particular column!). The columns emphasize personal responsibility...in work, school, success, and your own happiness. The target audience is every living person--not just young students. I'm looking forward to Mr. Richards' next book, "Kids Can't Write!".
